State Comptroller Sites Poor IDF Readiness for Reservists

idfThe State Comptroller’s end of year report cites a worrisome lack of preparedness in the IDF, particularly among reserve duty units, which is blamed on the lack of training, equipment and maintenance. The report is based on the audit of the IDF from January 2013 to March 2014.

Operation Protective Edge, the summer 2014 counter-terrorism offensive in Gaza was used an example, with the report documenting that reservists activated to join the fighting were not properly prepared to enter Gaza and the level of operational competence was below acceptable.

Significant budget cuts resulted in only 75% of scheduled training exercises taking place in 2013 and they only addressed 80% of IDF personnel. Emergency storage facilities house poorly maintained and outdated equipment, and this is a significant contributory factor to the unacceptable performance level. The comptroller explains that combat equipment is not properly maintained during peacetime as it should and this results in poor performance in times of emergency.

The comptroller feels that a training budget for reservists must be set aside, a budget that is relatively insignificant but critical to the performance level of these forces, which are imperative in a time of warfare.

  1. Nowecant, speaking of Eisav — when Yaakov needed to confront Eisav, he used three tactics: gifts, prayer, and, um, er… what was the third one? Learning?
