Over Three Decades Later, the Satmar Rebbe ZATZAL Continues to Inspire Donations to Israeli Mosdos

satThe 26th day of the month of Av marks the 36th yarhtzeit of the Satmar Rebbe, Reb Yoilish, who was also known by the moniker “The Anti-Zionist Admor.” Reb Yoel fought with strength and determination against the Zionist establishment and its partners, viewing it as a detriment to the coming of Moshiach and the root of all evil in this world. One of his more well known battles was against schools taking funding from the Zionist government and a year prior to his death Reb Yoel founded Keren Hatzalah, which continues to finance yeshivos that do not accept government funding.

Approximately three years ago, the Satmar Rebbe Reb Zalman Leib Teitelbaum established an additional fund called Shekel Hatahor as another means of supporting those schools that refused to take government funding. This new fund made headlines as Reb Zalman Leib arrived in Eretz Yisroel with millions to be disbursed to these schools on the condition that no secular subjects be taught and that students would not serve in the army. Substantial funds were also made available to those who learn in any kollel that does not accept government funding.

Many factions within the Chareidi community continue to debate budgetary issues but with a new year of studies about to commence Reb Zalman Leib has elected to send millions of dollars in funding to those mosdos which continue to operate based on the principles set down by the Satmar Rebbe Reb Yoel. Funds will be distributed on the yahrtzeit of the Satmar Rebbe Reb Yoel who inspired countless Chasidim to donate millions of dollars from their own pockets in order to continue to strengthen the Satmar mosdos in Eretz Yisroel, as an ocean away, thousands will flock to the Rebbe’s tzion in Kiryas Joel.

  1. You have to give credit to the Satmar Rebbe zt’l and to the Brisker Rov zt’l that Satmar and Brisk do not accept Israeli government funding of their schools and other institutions even though they legally qualify for such funding.

That and that they don’t vote in Israeli elections.

They put their money where their mouth is and stand on their principles despite financial losses.

  2. Both Satmar and Brisk are hypocrits tgey accept the Israeli Armys protection for without them today there would be no jews alive in Eretz Yisrael. There are plenty of “ehrliche chareidishe yidden” living in Israel as part of tge society and are achieveing great things for their community by being part of the system and not outside it.
Let them leave Israel and live in New York we dont need them we have enough פירוד בעם ישקאל without them.

You don’t have to agree with them, but to call them hypocrites for listening to Reb Yoel and the Brisker Rov Ztz”l is a bizoyon to those 2 Gedolim.
Many Gedolim disagreed with them, but still held them in the highest esteem. Shouldn’t we be doing the same?

  4. #4 NoSechel: That is hogwash. Neither Satmar nor Brisk asked for or accepted the Israeli Army. In fact, they both opposed it right from the beginning. And they were both there before the Army existed. If anyone needs to leave Eretz Yisroel it is the Zionists, not the Torah Jews who predate them and will be around long after the zionists fall into the dustbin of history.

#5 GG boy: The vast majority of the Gedolim agreed with the Satmar and Brisker Rov that Zionism is false and anti-Torah. The only thing they disagreed about was how to react to the fact that the State was unfortunately created.
