NYC Police Watchdog Substantiates More Complaints Than Ever

nypdrMore complaints against New York City police officers have been substantiated by the city’s police watchdog agency than ever before.

The Civilian Complaint Review Board said Wednesday that 29 percent of complaints that were investigated in September found an officer committed misconduct.

Executive Director Mina Malik says video drove the increase. She says video has both proven and disproven claims. More than half of the complaints that had accompanying video were substantiated.

The CCRB wants officers to wear body cameras every time they enter a home and to install surveillance cameras in police stations.

Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch says there has been a 19 percent reduction in complaints against officers. He says the complaints are a small number compared to the number of interactions with officers.
