Hikind Tours Brooklyn For Gas Price Survey

gAssemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) and his staff toured Brooklyn on Tuesday to survey dozens of gas station prices, assessing the cost of regular unleaded, self-serviced gas in the area.

The survey results showed that mega gasoline companies throughout Borough Park and Flatbush charged more than the local stations did. An Exxon Mobile off 44th St. and New Utrecht Ave. saw the steepest prices at $2.14 per gallon and $2.26 for credit, with Shell and Citgo not far behind, coming in at $2.10 per gallon.

The local off-brand gas station prices, however, paled in comparison. AP Oil Inc., located at 65th St. and 13th Ave., rang in at $2.01 per gallon. Hikind and his staff also visited three separate BP gas stations in the neighborhood only to find gas prices nearly 10 cents cheaper by the gallon than the leading gasoline companies—$2.04 per gallon.

Meanwhile Coney Island gas stations were also surveyed, with Shell, BP and Mobile stations charging roughly 5 cents more per gallon than in Borough Park and Flatbush. One BP station, off Coney Island Ave. and Avenue T, saw prices as high as $2.39 with a $2.29 cash option, despite a sign reading $2.09 per gallon.

“I believe people have the right to know what’s going on in their community. Everyone should be aware of the gas prices throughout their neighborhood,” said Hikind, who went on to reiterate that the survey was not to defer business away from more expensive gasoline at the larger companies. “This survey informs our residents, while pointing out the opportunity to find cheaper gas should they elect to drive around and seek it.”

  1. The gas stations on Coney Island Avenue are real crooks and gangsters. Ever since the 2 gas stations at the corner of Avenue P closed, its been off to the races, who can charge MORE than the next guy. Just because one of them (N & O) is allegedly owned by a “Frum” owner, it doesn’t mean he’s michuyav to davka charge more than anybody else. Where is the regulation?

  2. I don’t understand the point of this survey. If someone really wants to find the cheapest gas, he should drive around and find it. No one is being cheated or misled. It’s not his job to find the best deal for people. Also, a difference of $0.35 is not that much. I’ve seen much bigger differences in other cities.

  3. I agree with karlbenmarx — what a huge waste of time and effort. I’m sure much more important items are on the agenda for his constituents in Albany.

Once again, it looks like Dov has no clue.

  4. Yaakov Doe, because if went to gasbuddy.com, it wouldn’t be a very good press release.

He’s also giving bad advice. There’s no reason to waste gas and time driving around when you can easily check it out online.

  5. Thanks Mr. Hiking for being so generous and caring for your residents even beyond your obligations. Another reason we’ve elected you with an extremely high majority.
