A New Bill In Knesset To Address Leaving Children In A Vehicle

cicMK (Kulanu) Yifat Shasha-Biton has submitted a bill that addresses the alarming incidents in which children are left in parked cars. She feels that daycare centers should be responsible for calling the parents of children who do not appear for classes, stating this would be relevant to children up to the age of six. She suggests that one parent would be contacted to inquire as to why the child did not arrive.

This would alert parents to a possible incident of a forgotten child inside a vehicle.

The matter of forgetting children in a parked vehicle is a front-page item in Israel this week as R”L a toddler who was left in a vehicle for three hours died as a result.

  1. This tragic problem would seem be susceptible to a technology solution that would rely on sensors to activate some kind of alarm if a child is left in the car when both front seats are vacated. Reliance on after the fact telephone alerts from day care providers may be be too late to prevent another such tragedy.

  2. How about a non-technological solution? Besides putting your child in the backseat put your briefcase, jacket, hat, groceries, seforim, tallis/tefillin, pocketbook, etc). This way the driver will be forced to look at the backseat before exiting the car.
