NYC: There Will Be Wi-Fi At Every Underground Subway Station By The End Of The Year, Cell Service In Early 2017

subThe MTA is giving a holiday gift to straphangers.

By the end of the year, they will be able to get reception on their mobile devices at every underground subway station.

The agency is working with Transit Wireless to meet the mark on an accelerated rollout that originally was not set to be completed until the end of 2017.

“By the end of the year every underground station, all 279, will have Wi-Fi connectivity,” said MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas Prendergast. “By early next year they’ll all have cell phone service as well.”

Back in 2011, the MTA and Transit Wireless introduced wireless service at a few stations along 14th Street in Manhattan.

Brooklyn had been the last borough to have its stations get wireless service.
