UPDATED – Hagon Rav Chaim Stein Rushed To Hospital

12:10PM EST: [UPDATE BELOW] Please take a moment and be Mispallel for Hagon Rav Chaim Stein Shlita, the Rosh Yeshiva of Telshe Cleveland, who was rushed to the hospital just a few moments ago.

Highly reliable sources tell YWN that the Rosh Yeshiva is unconscious, and has bleeding in his brain R”L.

His name is Chaim Yaakov ben Chasia Miriam.

Rav Chaim Stein, is the senior Rosh Yeshiva in the United States. As one of the few remaining links to pre-war Europe, Rav Chaim continues to serve as a beacon of light and inspiration to the entire Olam Hatorah and the wider frum community.

May he have a Refua Shelayima along with all other Cholei Yisroel.

UPDATE 1:15PM: The Rosh Yeshiva has just been taken into emergency surgery to alleviate pressure in his brain. Please continue to be Mispallel.

UPDATE 8:00PM EST: The family of the Rosh Yeshiva tells YWN that the surgery has just ended (it did not start at the time reported earlier, but later in the day), and although it is too early to know for sure, the doctors feel that the surgery was a success.

Much Tefilla and Rachmei Shomayim are still need.

  1. As a talmid of the rosh Yeshiva Shlit”A Lrfuah shleima I am asking to verify his name. did they just add a name? it never was Chaim Yaakov

  2. #1 R U Sure U learnt at Telz? The Rosh HaYeshiva’s name IS Morienu V’Rabeinu Harav Chaim Yakov. May he, and all cholei Yisroel have speedy recovery.

  3. reply to #2: Indeed I learned in Telz. I left the Yeshiva in 5732. If I am not mistaken his mother’s name is Chiyena Miriam

  4. R’ Chaim was known for many years as R’ Chaim ben Binyomin Moshe. When he was ill, @ 15 years ago, they asked him for his name. He replied Chaim Yaakov ben . . . .
The talmidim asked him, “but you never said your name was Chaim Yaakov!” He replied that it was never nogea. It was common among Litvishe Yidden to ignore second names. But when he needed rachamim at that time, he wanted his name to be quoted accurately.
Since then he has been called to the Torah as Chaim Yaakov (at least in Telshe. Elsewhere, when asked his name he still says Chaim ben Binyomin Moshe.

  5. (#5) “R’ Chaim was known for many years as R’ Chaim ben Binyomin Moshe… It was common among Litvishe Yidden to ignore second names.”

If second names were not used, then why did he give his father’s second name?

“benuri” – you contradicted yourself. First, you said that “[his first name] never was Chaim Yaakov,” then in your second post, you said, “If I am not mistaken his mother’s name is Chiyena Miriam.”

BTW, what is his correct mother’s names – Chasia Miriam or Chiyena Miriam?

Your post is interesting. The rosh Hayesiva Harav Baruch sorotzkin was called to the torah (after his illness in 5762) as Moreinu Harav Refael baruch ben Moreinu Harav Shlomo Zalman.

I have not seen anywhere Rav Zalman’s name as Shlomo zalmen. I even saw his signature it reads zalmen. This matches what you say

  7. Binyomin Moshe was known because that was the name he gave to his son born in cleveland. And R Zalman Bloch was really shmuel Zalman, as also evidenced by his grandsons named after him.
R Chaim Telzer has some middle names too, (Chaim Shalom Tuvia) that got mostly lost, primarily because there are no einiklach.

  8. midwestener,

are you sure that his name was reb shmuel zalmen bloch and not reb zalmen shmuel??
didnt rav pesach stein name his son zalmen shmuel after his very own father in law rav zalmen bloch?
