Man Arrested For Painting Anti-Semitic Graffiti at Maryland Synagogue

Montgomery County Police have made an arrest in the series of hate-based vandalisms that occurred in Olney, Maryland.

Ian Jacob Baron, age 23, formerly of Olney, was arrested Wednesday morning.

He has been charged with malicious destruction of property over $500, two counts of malicious destruction of property under $500, one count of race/religious property damage, and one count of defacing religious property.

Baron is currently being held on a $5000.00 bond at the Montgomery County Detention Center.

As was reported by YWN, the incident occurred on July 26 at the B’Nai Shalom of Olney.

Police say Baron spray-painted anti-Semitic graffiti on the exterior walls, retaining walls, light posts, and parking lot of the B’Nai Shalom Synagogue.

Baron also scattered loose change near the entrance of the synagogue as a possible anti-Semitic act.

Additionally, two residences in the 18500 block of Rolling Acres Way in Olney had their mailboxes spray-painted red.

Several swastikas, the symbol “14/88,” and the symbol “SS” were also spray-painted onto the yards and trees of the two residences.

  1. Here is what I think should be included in this young man’s punishment for his offense against the synagogue:
    1. He must remove the graffiti from the synagogue or pay for its removal if it has already been removed prior to the court sentencing him.

    2. He should do community service work at the synagogue supervised by New York probation officials.

    3. He should have to atten shabbot services, stand before the congregation and apologize face-to-face for his transgressions against the synagogue and against Hashem.
