Bloomberg Donated $279 Million To Charities In 2010

Mayor Michael Bloomberg donated $279.2 million to charity in 2010, making him the second most generous philanthropist in the nation last year, according to the annual ranking by the Chronicle of Philanthropy and Slate magazine.

The billionaire mayor donated the money to 970 nonprofit groups that support the arts, human services, public affairs and other causes. The mayor’s aides are expected to release a list of these organizations later in the year.

The mayor jumped to the number-two spot from his fourth-place ranking the previous year, when he donated $254 million. This year, leading the list of most-generous donors was George Soros, the hedge-fund manager, who gave $332-million to his Open Society Foundations.

  1. I know he did build a Magen David Adom building at the entrance to Yerushalayim in memory of his father.

I’d love to know how much of that $279 million (and that’s just in ONE year!) went to Yiddishe causes.
