Schick’s Bakery, a popular producer of Passover and year-round pastries, has been acquired by a group of investors that includes Chap-a-Nash of Long Island, a well-known catering and takeout establishment, Kosher Today has learned. While the terms of the deal were not disclosed, it was believed that the sale will take effect immediately after Passover. Although it is one of the better-know bakeries in Boro Park, Schick’s has in recent years earned a national reputation for its extensive line of Kosher for Passover (non-gebrokst) pastries. Sources told Kosher Today that more than half of the bakery’s year-round sales revolve around Passover sales, which in recent years has included Costco, many supermarket chains and hotel programs all over the country.

Schick’s bakery was originally founded by Renee Schick in 1941. When her husband passed away at a young age, she became the sole supporter of the family, including sons caterer Arthur Schick and Jewish activist Dr. Marvin Schick. The bakery changed hands in 1960 when Moshe Braunfeld and Chaim Widawsky, brothers-in-law and holocaust survivors bought the bakery. In recent years, the bakery was run by Chaim Braunfeld and Sariel Widawsky, who lives in Israel and would spend several weeks before Passover each year to assist with the greatly expanded business of the Passover Schick’s. It was unclear why Braunfeld and Widawsky had sold the bakery although one industry source simply said: “It’s a great opportunity for the new owners.” He added: “Schick’s made it possible for people to enjoy quality Passover pastries that tasted as good as year-round cakes.”
