The S&P 500 added 1.09 points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,370.4 after falling as much as 0.5 percent. The Dow slipped 16.61, or 0.1 percent, to 12,609.42. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 7.68, or 0.3 percent, to 2,370.98. On the New York Stock Exchange, 919 stocks advanced and 935 declined.
