Rav Of Meron: Bonfires May Not Be Lit Before 4:00AM To Avoid Chilul Shabbos

HaGaon HaRav Meir Stern Shlita, Mora D’asra of Meron, released a psak halacha for Lag B’Omer stating no one is to light a bonfire before 4:00AM to avoid any and all chilul Shabbos by security forces and public transportation. Rav Stern also calls to push public transportation from 10:00PM to 2:00AM.

Rabbi Mordechai Halprin, who heads the Vaad Meron, adds he hopes to have dozens of prominent poskim sign the psak halacha as they continue working to avoid all chilul Shabbos. He hopes to have Gedolei Yisrael Shlita sign as well.

It appears that this year, more than other years in which Lag B’Omer began on motzei Shabbos, there is a growing momentum to push off the beginning of events with the lighting of the bonfire by the Boyaner Rebbe Shlita to avoid chilul Shabbos. The rebbe has already announced that he is delaying the bonfire to midnight to avoid chilul Shabbos.

  1. “To avoid chillul Shabbos”? Who’s he instructing this to? Seriously. Will there be “1” religious person who’ll leave when it’s still Shabbos?

  2. Arye, contrary to popular opinion, all Yidden are obligated in keeping Shabbos, even non religious ones. This might come as news to you, but many of us have known this all along.

  3. There ought to be a big effort right now to enlist the support of all the rabbonim of all the various groups, all the Chassidishe rebbes, to endorse this proposal. If we could ask the holy Rashbi himself what we should do, what does anyone think he would say?
