MK Elazar Stern Does Not Understand Why Religious Soldiers Turn Away from a Female Instructor

MK (Yesh Atid) on Wednesday, 18 Elul, addressed the storm surrounding the IDF’s decision to remove 30 religious soldiers who turned their backs to a female parachuting instructor.

During an interview with 103FM radio, Stern said, “I cannot imagine a situation in which thirty young men turn their backs on the instructor. There is no such Judaism. They did not teach us that, not me or you.”

Stern said that “a few weeks ago I jumped [with a parachute], and there was a female instructor and she did not touch me. I did not think about her at all, I thought about the jump.”

“The youth we raise should be prepared for the fact the person in front of him is a female. You can’t stand opposite a female,” Stern wondered. “If I am the commander of a parachuting school, I try to bring them a male guide.”

  1. The soldiers were lucky. Had they done this in the United States military they would have been court-martialed. Their actions were not only detrimental to the discipline that military forces need to save lives, they are putting their own lives at risk by not getting the best training. That is seriously stupid.

It should be noted that MK Stern is a retired IDF Major General and is religious. At one point he was the only religious platoon leader and later the only religious company commander. His pioneering work has helped make the IDF a more religious-friendly place. Nobody commenting here has the stature to criticize him.

  2. “Stern said, “I cannot imagine a situation in which thirty young men turn their backs on the instructor. There is no such Judaism. ”

I do not think Stern learned much about Judaism and orthodoxy. Shame he opens his mouth and says such stupidity. Better to keep his mouth shut and let us suspect he is an idiot rather than open his mouth and prove he is an idiot.

  3. if someone can show me the sief in the SA that the commentators above are referring to, i would appreciate it. I believe there are such seifem in the equivalent to our holy SA in the books of the Taliban and Shiites. Hashem yerachem such am hatratzis.

  4. he has a point. There are ways to not look at a female without being disrespectful. Most Rabbis have that ability. The lady thinks she being looked at but in reality shes not. Ive Never seen a Rav turn their back on a woman who was in front of them.

  5. Still not understanding.

Was she dressed inappropriately? Was she singing? Was she dancing?

If the answer is no, then what was the issue? Can someone enlighten me as to the exact issur being committed when listening to a woman speak?

  6. DrYidd, we’re in a new world: one in which we demonstrate our frum credentials by making a public display of shunning women and by using brutal, hateful language to justify it. Who needs se’ifim in the SA when we’ve got such kedusha?

  7. As I understand it, there was supposed to be a male instructor for the religious unit but instead they sent a female. The commander said that those who don’t want to watch her can turn around while she was talking .Part of being in a religious unit is that there is supposed to be only make instructors! Stern long ago sold out the religious population as is obvious from him joining Yesh Atid, the most religious bashing party !

  8. charlihall & Co

are you aware of the lav ‘lo sasury acrey levachem ….’ , hirhurein, al teharer bayom vlo savo…”

US armies they wuoldnt have done it but as this is a jewish medina and they were promised to be accomodated etc. to
    To Mr Taliban,
the torah is mostly what you call taliban so we can assume you dont like it. you have option to join catholic, chrritian, reform etc. They also didnt like this torah, so whats your prob?

  9. Just to correct charliehalls willfully misleading assertion. Elazer Stern has proven himself on almost every occasion to attack Torah-true yiddishkeit given any excuse. I will always respect those who served in the IDF for the sacrifices and risks they take but Stern has no stature at all in anything related to yahadus and yiddishkeit.

He’s an embarrassment to his dati-Leumi kehilla of Hoshaya.
