Central Election Committee Bans Video Of Rav Offering Brachos To Voters

The Central Election Committee has disqualified this video as a Shas election advert because it was ruled Rav Yigal Cohen was promising a bracha for voting Shas, which is prohibited under election law.

  1. A promise that G-d will bless you for voting for us is no different than a promise that “history” or the Arabs or leftists “your own children” will bless you if you vote for us. It is NOT the same as giving one’s own blessing in exchange for a vote.

  2. Why was this even a close call?? The fact that a Rav is featured in a video promoting one political party doesn’t mean its exempt from the prohibition on ads in the days just prior to election day. If the Rav was simply encouraging everyone to vote for the candidate of their choice that might be OK but clearly Cohen was not suggesting to vote for Ganz/Lapid slate if that was your preference. I wish the U.S. would adopt this king of ban but unfortunately, the courts would probably rule it violates the First Amendment.
