Illegal Jerusalem Shul Marked for Demolition

Prior to the establishment of Beis Medrash Sukkas Shalom in the N’vei Yaakov neighborhood in northern Jerusalem about a month ago, the lomdim and mispallalim had to go a considerable distance to the closed shul/beis medrash. At present, the structure, which the city deems to be illegal, is slated for demolition. The structure is located on Reuven Gamzun Street in the community, serving over 70 families in the area.

The rabbonim of the community supported the opening of the shul, including mora d’asra HaGaon Rav Tzvi Weber and HaGaon Rav Yisrael Yitzchak Zilberman. However, on Thursday, city inspectors arrived and issued an order to evacuate the premises within 24 hours.

According to a Kikar Shabbos News report, Deputy Jerusalem Mayor Eliezer Ruchberger, who is also responsible for the city’s planning and building portfolio, and Deputy Mayor Yisrael Kellerman, arrived at an agreement with city officials, by which the evacuation will be delayed for one week to permit probing the legality of the shul and towards permitting it to remain.

At present, prior to reaching agreement, the shul, which was built illegally, is slated for demolition.
