The Hezbollah terror organization attempted to assassinate Northern Command chief Maj. Gen. Rafi Milo in a drone attack during an operational tour in southern Lebanon several weeks ago, IDF officials revealed on Thursday.
Milo narrowly survived the assassination attempt, exiting his vehicle along with another officer moments before the drone exploded. B’Chasdei Hashem, no one was injured in the incident.
According to the report, Hezbollah fired a FPV (first-person view) explosive drone at an IDF convoy while Milo was touring a village in southern Lebanon alongside senior officers and troops.
The incident comes amid a growing drone threat along the northern border. In recent weeks, several IDF soldiers have been killed in explosive drone attacks in southern Lebanon.
Recent reports indicate that Hezbollah has adopted a strategy known as “commander hunting,” focused on locating, tracking, and targeting senior IDF officers and command centers through the use of drones and coordinated attacks. According to assessments, the objective is to undermine the IDF’s command-and-control capabilities, disrupt military operations, and score psychological victories against Israel.
As part of this strategy, Hezbollah has attempted to target Iron Dome batteries, vehicles of senior commanders, and other key command assets. Some attacks combine drones, rockets, and artillery fire in attempts to overwhelm Israel’s air defenses and make interception attempts more complex.
Following the close call, the IDF changed its protocols for visits to southern Lebanon along some routes and sent additional protective equipment to IDF soldiers in the area.
