Extremists Burn Flags on Yom HaAtzma’ut

Extremist elements affiliated with Neturei Karta on Wednesday, Israel’s 61st Independence Day, burned Israeli flags in Bet Shemesh. Participants in the event also displayed signs lamenting the creation of the State of Israel, rejecting any recognition of the modern-day Jewish state.

A small number of protestors also displayed ‘anti-Zionist’ signs at Kikar Shabbos in Yerushalayim.

  1. Why is this new? I think YWN is just trying to raitz un the olam against anti-ziyoni elemnets. The article should be deleted.

  2. They are only extremists if they turn out to be wrong. Perhaps they are. Perhaps Herzl and Ben Gurioun, in spite of themselves, have been good for Yiddishkeit. Perhaps Jews are better off and safer in Israel.

If in a few centuries we look back at the zionist period, and see it as having caused a massive decline in frumkeit, and a war with the Muslims that ends up with catastrophic results, then Neturei Karta will be seen as virtually prophetic.

If that happens, the frum Jews who supported zionism will be seen as extremists similar to the supporters of Shabbatai Zvi, and their opponents will be seen as the mainstream.

Given that Israeli independence day is the celebration of a military victory (albeit more of winning a battle rather than a war), and as we seem to have a tradition of not celebrating military victories (no full hallel on the last days of Pesach, remembering the miracle of the menorah rather than the battles of Hanukah), there seems to be good reason not to celebrate Iyar 5.

  3. #1, you are wrong. How do you condone the actions of the NK?!?! They hate yidden, and will 1 day have to answer for their actions here!

  4. #3. I did not condone or condemn anything. I just said that this is not news, old at best old news, and to me it looks like YWN is just trying to raise the sina level based on their own agenda. The real Yeshiva World ignores Yom Hazmtzmaot, and YWN should too, if they want to have the name YWN. Let HkBH decide if they are right or wrong.

Editors Response: Last we checked, you were not our Rov (who tells us to cover Yom Ha’atzmut and Yom Hzikaron)…. In any event, if we wanted to “rock the boat”, this story would have been a front-page story. So please, get a grip.

And like you yourself wrote, let HKBH decide who is right and who is wrong. Hippocrate.

We don’t need to do the deciding. We have Rabbonim who do this on a daily basis for us.

    Nuff said.

  5. To “akuperma” #2 and #1- Yom HaAtzma’ut is NOT the celebration of a military victory. It is a commemoration of the day the world recognized the formation of the modern “state of Israel”. Many (shomray Torah u’mitvos) believe that recognition by the umos ha’olam is the main prerequisite to the reestablishment of a Jewish state. While I deplore and am disgusted by the apikorsim who are, for the most part, the “leaders” of Israel, and the majority of their policies (which are a chilul HaSh*m), consider the following… -For 2,000 years the Jewish people suffer in galus. This culminates with the worst period in our history – the Holocaust in which some SIX MILLION of our brothers and sisters are systematically brutally tortured and murdered. The war ends and our people is at its lowest ebb ever, families murdered, survivors scattered and homeless, bastions of Torah study utterly destroyed, a dark and seemingly hopeless period, – yet -within just 3 years of the war’s end (and after 2,000 years) a new state of Israel is born and – just 19 years after that Yerushalayim is re-united under Jewish sovereignty, and – in the last 61 years Jews from all over the world, from the U.S. to Australia, from Russia to Ethiopia, from France to Yemen – are returning to our homeland, and -Torah is being studied there at a level like NEVER before. Anyone who thinks that all this has happened by accident (b’mikreh), anyone who does not see the yad HaSh*m in this (despite the medina’s numerous and horrific flaws)is, in my humble opinion, BLIND! Needless to say, even if one disagrees with me in my assessment of all this, – the so-called Neturai karta, who align themselves with mamash sonay yisrael, with yishmaelim who KILL Jews, they will pay a VERY heavy price in the next world!

  6. #7 -the world hardly recognized Israel – even the US hasn’t given full recognition (that’s why the embassy is in Tel Aviv) – at most the US recognizes Israel has some rights in the 1947 borders (partition plan). If you want to see what the “world” believes, go to the UN conference on racism. Indeed, the number of countries we can safely live in have decreased, and that one H-bomb on Tel Aviv and virtually the entire yeshiva world vanishes. If push comes to shove, the US is a lot safer.

As for the holocaust, a strong argument can be made that the reason the British actively worked to prevent Jews from leaving Europe was fear of the zionists gaining strength. For most of the history of the zionist movement, aliyah was more likely to result in a decline in observance, in large part due to coercion from the secular elites.

  7. To #8: “the US is a lot safer” – yeah, right! And our German Yidden thought Berlin was Jerusalem! If you think that if an H-bomb fell on Tel Aviv (chas v’chalila) that you would be safe in the US, you are naive in the EXTREME. Furthermore, have you noticed who the new president is, how he wants to become pals with iran’s “hitler” and is giving 100s of millions of dollars to the PLO?!? Safer here? – NOT!!! My brother, remember – galus is a punishment, NOT a safer place to be than Eretz Yisrael. Even if you don’t agree, be smart and make sure everyone in your family has a valid passport.

  8. What is the big deal? The “Israeli” flag is not a Jewish symbol! It is no different then the Irish or Chinese flag. The State of “Israel” is not a Jewish state but a Zionist state and does not have any right to speak in the name of Klal Yisroel!
