Israel: A Notification You do Not Wish to Receive

mishtara.jpgNotification is being sent to tens of thousands of Israeli drivers, telling them that their drivers’ license is suspended. They will receive messages to their cellular telephones, instructing them to forfeit their license at a Ministry of Transportation License Bureau.

The first wave of notifications will be sent next week, a project spearheaded by Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz, who is working with Israel Police Traffic Enforcement officials. The first wave will target 15,000 recipients. They will be informed that driving under suspension is a violation of the penal code and if apprehended, they will be incarcerated.

Prerecorded messages will be delivered to their home and cellular telephones. The idea of sending SMS text messages was discarded since legal official believe they cannot verify delivery.

Drivers with 36 points or over or drivers whose license is suspended for medical reasons, will receive the voice notification.

  1. About time–get them off the roads for good.
The problem is, us amazing Israelis will drive with license or not.

  2. As usual, Americans assume that in Israel everything works as a normal country. Unfortunately that is incorrect! The police here dole out fines and points often for nothing or for trumped-up charges. I personally have not suffered this (I dont own a car!) but I have witnessed it on various occasions. Once I tried to intercede on behalf of a “chiloni” driver accused of not stopping at a STOP sign when I saw him stopping. I was threatened with “obstructing the course of justice” etc if I dont leave the area immediately. Another time I even went to court to testify for another driver accused of going through a red light when he had not. The court refused to accept my word against the policeman insinuating that I was lying to help another chareidi! Whilst I agree that there are many crazy drivers in Israel, please dont assume that anyone with points is guilty.
