Hamas Seeking to Up the Ante in Shalit Deal

hamas.jpgSeeking to maximize a deal for the release of Gilad Shalit, Hamas is working with the Arab media, utilizing the forum to increase the pressure on Israeli negotiators. Senior Hamas officials are now reporting that a deal is not imminent due to Israel’s refusal on three critical points; (1) the ongoing dispute regarding 50 terrorists on the Hamas list of 450; (2) Israel’s refusal to include Israeli Arab citizens on the list; (3) and Israel’s insistence that on deporting 130 of the hardened terrorists to prevent them from engaging in terror in Israel in the future.

According to a report appearing on Friday in the London-based Arabic al-Hayat newspaper, Hamas has rejected a number of solutions that were recommended by the German mediator.

Regarding a Kuwaiti media report earlier this week that Shalit has been moved to Cairo, it now appears the report did indeed lack credibility as was indicated at the time, and Shalit is believed to still be in Hamas-controlled Gaza.

  1. I don’t understand how reports in the Arab media ups teh pressure on Israel. There is nothing new; these three issues have been reported on for days or longer already
