Peleg Yerushalmi Faction Protests May Resume Following Another Arrest

Another talmid yeshiva listed as missing from IDF duty was arrested by authorities. This talmid is affiliated with the Peleg Yerushalmi headed by HaGaon HaRav Shmuel Auerbach Shlita.

When a talmid affiliated with the Yerushalmi branch was arrested last month, there were violent protests held in many cities nationwide.

If protests begin in response to this latest arrest, then it is possible that protests may target the International Jerusalem Marathon, which is set for this erev Shabbos, 19 Adar, is likely. This is an international sporting event attracting over 30,000 runners worldwide.

The latest arrest took place on Sunday night when military police arrested the Sephardi talmid yeshiva in his Ofakim home. A warrant was issued for his arrest when he failed to respond to register for the draft in adherence to the instructions of Rav Auerbach. Unlike the gedolim in Bnei Brak, who instruct bochrim to register for the draft, Rav Auerbach feels talmidim may not cooperate with the military in any way, including registering.

  1. Unlike the gedolim in Bnei Brak, who instruct bochrim to register for the draft

It’s not just the Gedolim in Bnei Brak who hold this way; the vast majority of Rabbonim in Yerushalayim (including R’ Shmuel’s older brother, R’ Azreil Aurebach [who also happens to be R’ Elyashiv’s son-in-law], and the Roshei Yeshiva of Mir, Ponovech, and Chevron) also agree to the position of R’ Shteinman and R’ Chaim.
