US President Barak Obama telephoned Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu ahead of this week’s scheduled proximity talks, mediated negotiations between Israel and the PA (Palestinian Authority) handled by US envoy George Mitchell. The president called to congratulate the prime minister, phoning him after he returned from Sharm el-Sheikh where he met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, seeking to enlist his support towards advancing the talks as well.
Officials in the Prime Minister’s Office stated it was a cordial 20 minute conversation during which Obama reiterated America’s support for Israel. According to Yisrael HaYom, quoting an anonymous senior political source, the president will do his utmost towards advancing direct talks between Israel and the PA.
Mitchell arrived in Israel on Monday to prepare for the talks, scheduled to meet with Netanyahu on Wednesday in Jerusalem. He is set to meet with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) in Ramallah on Thursday and Friday.
