Ramapo PD Investigating Fatal Pedestrain Struck On Route 45

rpdJust before 8:00AM Monday morning, the Ramapo Police Department was dispatched to the scene of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle on Route 45, just north of Guzzel’s Deli, in the Hillcrest area of the Town of Ramapo. Upon the first officer’s arrival a pedestrian was found lying on the shoulder on the east side of the roadway. The pedestrian was unconscious and unresponsive. Rockland Paramedics and Spring Hill Ambulance responded to the scene to administer advanced life support. A short distance north of the pedestrian a 2011 Nissan Rouge was pulled onto the east shoulder of Rtoute 45.

The driver of the Nissan, Rony Pierre, of Spring Valley, NY, appears to have driven off the main traveled portion of the roadway and struck the pedestrian as the pedestrian walked north along the shoulder of Route 45. Pierre then continued for a short distance before pulling over.

The pedestrian, Matais Lopez, 33 yrs. old, of Hillcrest, was pronounced dead at the scene by Rockland Paramedics. Mr. Lopez was removed from the scene by investigators of the RC Medical Examiner’s Office. An autopsy will be conducted at a later time to determine cause of death.

It appears that when Mr. Lopez was struck by the Nissan he was walking northbound on the shoulder, so it appears Mr. Lopez was struck to the rear of his body. Mr. Lopez was on the hood of the Nissan for a short period of time before sliding off of the car and landing where he was found by the first responding officers.

At this time it does not appear that there was any alcohol or drug involvement on the part of the driver of the Nissan.

This crash is being investigated by investigators from the Ramapo PD.
