NYC Bike Tour Wins Lawsuit Over Traffic Fees


Five Boro Bike TourA judge says New York City’s largest bike tour won’t have to pay the city nearly $1 million for traffic control during next month’s event.

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Margaret Chan said Thursday she wasn’t convinced by the city’s arguments for classifying the Five Boro Bike Tour as a non-charitable athletic parade.” .

She said the classification “is unreasonable and cannot be confirmed.”

The 40-mile event is scheduled for May 5.

The organization is recognized as a tax-exempt public charity by the IRS. It says money raised from the event goes for public health causes.

The judge said questions the city has raised are for the IRS, not the police department.

The New York Times says the city Law Department is weighing “various legal options.”
