FBI Investigating Amish Beard-Cutting Attacks

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Members of the Amish community in eastern Ohio are the subject of a federal investigation following a wave of Amish-on-Amish incidents, FBI spokeswoman Vicki Anderson confirmed to CNN Wednesday.

Five men have been arrested and charged with kidnapping and burglary stemming from an incident at the home of Myron and Arlene Miller in early October in which the group of men pulled Myron out of the home by his beard, held him down, and cut off large portions of the beard. An Amish man’s beard is a significant symbol of his faith.

According to Jefferson County Sheriff Fred J. Abdalla, the incident at the Millers’ home was one of a handful of incidents throughout several counties in which as many as 30 men and women carried out similar attacks.

Additional arrests stemming from the other attacks aren’t likely, Abdalla said, because the other victims have not pressed charges. It is Amish tradition to solve conflicts by means of their faith and church, without the involvement of law enforcement.

The perpetrators are believed to be followers of a breakaway Amish group led by Sam Mullet. Of the five that have been arrested, three are Mullet’s sons.

Local law enforcement officials and members of the Amish community believe Mullet has created a cult and is single-handedly behind the beard cutting incidents and other crimes in recent years.

Asked by CNN whether the accusations that he’s behind the beard incidents were true, Mullet responded by asking rhetorically, “Beard cutting is a crime, is it?” He then denied the allegations that he’s running a cult before dismissing CNN from his property.

US Says No To PA Inclusion In UNESCO

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

While PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) continues lobbying efforts towards inclusion in UNESCO, it is becoming increasingly clear the PA lacks a majority in the Security Council. Hence, many view the pressure towards being accepted by UNESCO as a backdoor attempt to gain acceptance into the United Nations.

The US congress has signaled it stands behind the White House in its opposition to any PA unilateral measures towards achieving statehood, committed to the continued negotiating process with Israel and the so-called two-state solution.

As such, the Americans have signaled to UNESCO officials that acceptance of the PA would result in a cessation of US funding. America currently infuses $70 million annually into UNESCO, representing about 20% of the organization’s operating budget.

Germany Threatens to Cancel Sub Order Over Jerusalem Construction

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Despite the good diplomatic relations between Berlin and Jerusalem, when it comes to Israel building new homes in its capital, Germany stands firmly opposed, along with most of the international community. While Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu denied a diplomatic fallout existed between the countries over the construction issue, it appears relations at present are strained at best.

When Israel recently announced plans to build 1,100 housing units in the Gilo neighborhood of the capital, the news was met with a round of condemnations, including Israel’s strongest allies, the United States and Germany among those allies.

It appears that Germany however is unwilling to accept the construction decision as a fait accompli, with Berlin flexing it military armor muscle, now stating that if Israel does not back down from its decision, Germany may have to reconsider an order for another nuclear submarine, which would be the sixth received by the Israel Navy from Germany.

Chabad’s Rav Menachem Brod On Shalit Deal

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Chabad spokesman Rabbi Menachem Brod, editor of the weekly ‘Sichat HaShavua’ has spoken out against the Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange deal. R’ Brod states that it was expected, that after the jubilation surrounding Gilad’s return home safe and sound the difficult questions would be asked.

Rabbi Brod explains that beyond the obvious, much was lost in this deal, values, including the concept that was once held in high regard, that Jewish blood is not cheap. Heads of the various agencies vowed to members of bereaved families during shiva visits that they would not rest until the outstretched hand of the Israeli system apprehended those responsible for the heinous acts of terrorism. These very same bereaved families feel betrayed and deceived today.

Rabbi Brod ponders what happened to our commitment to a tenacious war against terrorism. For years, Israel taught the world the true value of this concept, but today, the world stares at us in shock, incapable of understanding what changed and how we permit the terrorists to emerge with this victory in hand.

What about the value we place on human life? That is why we are all rejoicing with the Shalits but what about the tears that will be shed in the future as a result of this act?

It is now clear that the murderers released did not sign on any commitment to refrain from future terrorism, and barring a miracle that is exactly what they will do, return to slaughtering Jews. But behind the future bereaved families there is no public relations firm, organized media effort or tee-shirts to brainwash the tzibur.

There is another value that was once cherished, that has also been trampled with this deal. With our own hands we have turned these heinous bloodthirsty terrorists into “prisoners” and “security prisoners”. The “prisoner exchange deal” as it was called involved bloodthirsty criminals, brutal terrorists that have been turned into legitimate fighters for a cause. The moral consciousness has been lost. Terrorists serving their sentences are now ‘prisoners of war’.

The foundation for the war against terror is to remove the legitimacy that surrounds it today. Terrorism is not a part of any legitimate struggle of any part of humanity. One who chooses terror as a means to an end and strikes out against civilians has removed himself from the family called ‘civilized nations’ and is now counted among the ‘sub-human’. The rules of play of the civilized world do not apply to these people and from here on in, an all-out war must be waged against such people. This is the principle behind the war waged by enlightened nations in Afghanistan, Iraq and against other pro-terror regimes.

The wholesale release of terrorists results in a fatal blow to the legitimacy of this battle against terror. The brothers of these despicable terrorists view them as heroes. The PA (Palestinian Authority), with whom we signed peace agreements, pays them salaries and bonuses towards proving they are soldiers imprisoned by the enemy. With the release of these murderers we too accepted this position in total contradiction to our Parsha, (Bereishis 9:6): “Whoever sheds the blood of a man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of G-d He made man.”

“שופך דם האדם באדם דמו יישפך, כי בצלם אלוקים עשה את האדם”.

This article will appear in the coming week’s Chabad Sichat HaShavua.

Bernard & Ruth Madoff Attempted Suicide, Says Ruth In Her First Interview

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

In the only interview Ruth Madoff has given about her husband’s crimes, she tells Morley Safer she and Bernard were so distraught over the burden of those crimes that they attempted suicide together. Safer also speaks to Madoff’s son, Andrew, for a story that will provide the first inside account from the immediate family of the man who stole billions of dollars.

An excerpt from the interview will be broadcast tonight on the “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley.”

“I don’t know whose idea it was, but we decided to kill ourselves because it was so horrendous what was happening,” Ruth Madoff tells Safer. “We had terrible phone calls. Hate mail, just beyond anything and I said ‘…I just can’t go on anymore.’”

“We took pills and woke up the next day….It was very impulsive and I am glad we woke up,” she says.

Some forethought went into the decision, however, because Ruth sent a package to their son Andrew, breaching a court order before making the suicide pact. In the package were sentimental items, including jewelry. Three years later, Andrew asked his mother why she had sent him the jewelry. “And she told me that she and my father had planned to kill themselves…they put that package together beforehand and sent it out,” he tells Safer.

Top US Police Commanders In Israel For ADL Counter-Terrorism Training

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

A delegation of senior American police commanders from the Northeast United States is visiting Israel this week as part of a counter-terrorism training seminar sponsored by the Anti-Defamation League. The trip brings together law enforcement from the New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and New Hampshire and provides them with an opportunity to network and learn from each other and their Israeli counterparts.  A senior officer from the Italian National Police’s Counter Terrorism unit is also participating in the seminar.

The participants will travel across Israel to interact with commanders from the Israel National Police to learn first-hand how Israel deals with terror. These briefings include operational approaches, border security, monitoring of holy sites and media response during a crisis.

Additionally, they will learn about the psychological impact of terror attacks and meet with first responders and learn about emergency preparedness at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital.

Phyllis Gerably, Director of the ADL Israel office: “Since 9/11, the Anti-Defamation League and the Israel National Police have worked together to provide opportunities for the Israeli police officers to share their experience in counter-terrorism with their American counterparts.  ADL trainings are conducted regularly in the US and in Israel.   The meetings are beneficial for both the US and Israeli officers who have a real chance to learn from one another”.

White House Issues First Response To ‘We the People’ Petition Initiative

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

The White House first official response to its “We the People” initiative addresses the petition that the government should force lenders to forgive and/or help people pay off student loans. The issue gathered 32,008 signatures, which is more than the 25,000 signatures needed within thirty days of its initiation to earn a response.

The response is by Roberto Rodriguez, Special Assistant to the President for Education Policy. It largely explains the President’s new student loan plan which will not flatly forgive loans. However it is designed to help people pay off some student debt over a period of time. Due do posting a response, the petition was closed.

In the mean time, the issue regarding Sholom Rubashkin, the second strongest at the White House site, gathered 51,971 signatures. However, since no official response has been made public at this time, the petition is therefore still open and can still be signed HERE.

Egged Bus Targeted In Drive-by Rock Attack

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

An Egged number 170 bus traveling on Route 60 near Migron was targeted in a drive-by rock-throwing attack on Tuesday, 27 Tishrei. A large stone struck the window next to the driver the daily HaMevaser reports, and B’chasdei Hashem the armor-plated bus designed to withstand gunfire also was able to withstand the large stone.

However, had this been a regular bus or another vehicle, one with window’s that would have exploded on impact, the driver would have lost control of the vehicle. Such was the case in the drive-by rock attack that claimed the lives of Asher Pamer and his infant son Yonatan near Hebron in September 2011.

ACORN Playing Behind Scenes Role In ‘Occupy’ Movement

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

The former New York office for ACORN, the disbanded community activist group, is playing a key role in the self-proclaimed “leaderless” Occupy Wall Street movement, organizing “guerrilla” protest events and hiring door-to-door canvassers to collect money under the banner of various causes while spending it on protest-related activities, sources tell FoxNews.com.

The former director of New York ACORN, Jon Kest, and his top aides are now busy working at protest events for New York Communities for Change (NYCC). That organization was created in late 2009 when some ACORN offices disbanded and reorganized under new names after undercover video exposes prompted Congress to cut off federal funds.

NYCC’s connection to ACORN isn’t a tenuous one: It works from the former ACORN offices in Brooklyn, uses old ACORN office stationery, employs much of the old ACORN staff and, according to several sources, engages in some of the old organization’s controversial techniques to raise money, interest and awareness for the protests.

Sources said NYCC has hired about 100 former ACORN-affiliated staff members from other cities – paying some of them $100 a day – to attend and support Occupy Wall Street. Dozens of New York homeless people recruited from shelters are also being paid to support the protests, at the rate of $10 an hour, the sources said.

At least some of those hired are being used as door-to-door canvassers to collect money that’s used to support the protests.

Sources said cash donations collected by NYCC on behalf of some unions and various causes are being pooled and spent on Occupy Wall Street. The money is used to buy supplies, pay staff and cover travel expenses for the ex-ACORN members brought to New York for the protests.

In one such case, sources said, NYCC staff members collected cash donations for what they were told was a United Federation of Teachers fundraising drive, but the money was diverted to the protests.

Sources who participated in the teachers union campaign said NYCC supervisors gave them the addresses of union members and told them to go knock on their doors and ask for contributions—and did not mention that the money would go toward Occupy Wall Street expenses. One source said the campaign raked in about $5,000.

Current staff members at NYCC told FoxNews.com the union fundraising drive was called off abruptly last week, and they were told NYCC should not have been raising money for the union at all.

Sources said staff members also collected door-to-door for NYCC’s PCB campaign — which aims to test schools for deadly toxins —but then pooled that money together with cash raised for the teachers union and other campaigns to fund Occupy Wall Street.

“We go to Freeport, Central Islip, Park Slope, everywhere, and we say we’re collecting money for PCBs testing in schools. But the money isn’t going to the campaign,” one source said.

“It’s going to Occupy Wall Street, and we’re not using that money to get schools tested for deadly chemicals or to make their kids safer. It’s just going to the protests, and that’s just so terrible.”

A spokesman for the United Federation of Teachers told FoxNews.com, “The UFT is not involved in any NYCC fundraising on the PCB issue.”

Multiple sources said NYCC is also using cash donations through canvassing efforts in New York’s Harlem and Washington Heights neighborhoods for union-backed campaigns to fund the Wall Street protests.

Thieves Target Bnei Brak Street Signs

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Two Gush Dan area teenagers are in custody, apparently for making off with Bnei Brak area street signs. The youths are not sign collectors, but they take them for their metallic value.

It began with phone calls to the city’s ‘moked’ dispatcher, with residents reporting youths standing on a ladder, busying themselves with the street signs on Tiveria Street. The residents apparently never suspected the youths were trying to make off with the signs.

When some passersby questioned the youths, they boldly responded that the city decided to change the name of the street, and they were implementing the work of removing the old signs. When police arrived and inspected the youth’s vehicle, they found many signs from a number of streets. They were taken into custody and the vehicle impounded.

It appears the suspects in custody are PA (Palestinian Authority) residents from Shechem, who were inside “Israel proper” illegally.

Rav Halbertal Explains His Platform

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Following the stormy televised debate between MK R’ Yisrael Eichler and attorney Rabbi Dov Halbertal a number of days ago, Kikar Shabbat has interviewed the latter again, seeking clarification on some of the positions he espoused in that event. Following is a synopsis of the 19-minute interview.

Halbertal explained that he was looking for a dialogue, not a debate, and he was simply seeking to explain his position, not to go head-to-head with Eichler. He explains that he does not support Reform conversions of the raising of pigs in Israel chas v’sholom, but the issues at hand are conceptual and he was trying to explain his ideas, not a position on any one issue.

HALBERTAL:

If we have a goal, to separate between religion and state, thereby permitting religion to stand on its own, it places religion in the proper light, unscathed by politics – on the pedestal that is rightfully the place of religion. Today what exists is deal making – give us money for [Shas educational system] El HaMayan and we will vote for drone planes. If you agree to support a building freeze in Yehuda and Shomron, we will give you a deputy mayor slot in Jerusalem.

Therefore, I am coming with a revolutionary idea, a total separation towards enhancing the religion. Such a policy will also bring the secularists closer and after all, they are our brothers. Remember the Chazon Ish spoke of bringing them closer with acts of love. Does one genuinely believe throwing rocks is an act of love?

The price to be paid by such disengagement — total separation of religion of state is one seeking a Reform conversion, will get it. One not looking for any conversion may live that way. If he wishes to raise pigs, that is what he will do for in essence, I am telling him that he may do as he pleases and we in turn will do what we wish, and that has much significance. I add that regarding this, as I said in the past, the concept may not be a foreign one to Maran Rav Elyashiv either because the ongoing conflict between religion and state grows as the secular residents are exposed to more Western values. The young generation today, which is marvelous in certain aspects is not about to seek religious values for it lacks a source from which it may imbibe these values. Therefore, that segment looks the way it does.

Regarding the Chareidim, we are growing but not everyone representing the chareidi tzibur is suited for the job – actually many are far from it.

In short, the friction between the two, chareidim and the non-frum continues to increase without an end in sight.

Therefore, one should ask oneself where religion stands in today’s reality. We are compelled to compromise. Religion is compromised on a daily basis as I see daily at Rav Elyashiv. It begins with appointing Dayanim and continues in many areas. Appointments come with political considerations. Look at the controversy that surrounded the state conversions. HaRav Ovadia [Yosef] accepted them, but that too was a compromise. I maintain the separation does have a price, but ultimately, it is a gain for the frum community, permitting us to live a live ‘l’chatchila’ as Rav Elyashiv would like us to live.

There is a reality that exists and we cannot deny this reality. We must acknowledge it and address it. There are two camps, both Jews. One we will call chareidi and the other secular. In essence, there are two states, Tel Aviv and Meah Shearim. This is a de facto reality. Anyone remotely exposed to reality understands exactly what I am talking about.

It is not sufficient to speak and create hype but this demands thought and reasoning towards arriving at a solution. I was born in the Diaspora and worked there and I believe I have an understanding.

Tell me, why is it that in Katmandu there are so many at Seder on Pesach but the G-d of Katmandu is not here in Israel? Can someone explain this to me? When I was at a frum family in Rome for Shabbos and they hosted a secular family, not a small one. I saw the response to the davar Torah and the Shabbos table. Why is that not present here in Israel?

The reason, and there is only one, is because we took religion and mixed it with politics which has resulted in feelings of disdain and hate that have spread to our religion. Therefore, the cure is total separation. If you wish, ask Rav Chaim Cohen, who is also close to the Rav [Elyashiv]. He too favors this approach. Rav [Yosef] Efrati also supports this, from the other side. He sees just how the state compromises religion and is not pleased with that reality.

Today there is the discussion surrounding the converts, to accept the state conversions, not to accept them, to disqualify those who underwent the program or not to disqualify them. We have to establish state committees to investigate and probe.

There is the matter of the seminaries and the state now involved in our education system. The state speaks about ‘core subjects’ This is the result. Who needs this? What is the benefit? Ask Rav Efrati if he supports the plan regarding the state involvement in seminaries – he does. Ask R’ Yisrael Elyashiv, grandson of Maran, he too supports the concept. So you see, those very close to the Rav are in favor. The Rav however, for Gadol HaDor it is different. A Gadol HaDor may not have the luxury to launch such an initiative, at times sending others.

KIKAR SHABBAT:

He sent you?

HALBERTAL:

No, chalilah! I would not dare to speak in his name or represent him. I don’t have such a mandate. I see him daily and say good morning. That is all.

I see a growing movement of people who wish to be without a religion. I attended such an event and asked ‘do you really wish to be without a religion. Of course the response was no, explaining their movement is a reaction, nothing more.

KIKAR:

Your often use the example of those who throw rocks but we all know this addresses a very negligible number of people, those that are rejected and viewed as outcasts by the chareidi community and the secular community is aware of this as well. Permit me to return to Rabbi Eichler, who accused you of using the media. After all, you present a situation that in actuality is not a real one. It does not reflect true reality. A non frum person who comes in to meet with members of the chareidi community emerges saying this is not the chareidim I know because the chareidim that he knows are those very same individuals that the media wants them to view as representative of that community.

HALBERTAL:

If this was the case you would be correct. I mentioned the rock-throwing only because it occurred just this past motzei Shabbos and yes, it was not a major event. I do not agree by the way, for if the community truly ousted these individuals as you say, the rock-throwing would not occur – l’havdil elef havdolos if Hamas truly wanted to stop rocket attacks, a single rocket would not be fire. That is reality. There is a silent approval and that is how they continue.

KIKAR:

What doesn’t Rav Elyashiv come out against them?

HALBERTAL:

Because he cannot come out daily with such declarations.

KIKAR:

Not every day but you say on separation of religion and state he cannot publically comment. Then those individuals, the small group, who act contrary to Halacha, desecrate Shabbos, injure security forces and attack with rocks – why can’t Rav Elyashiv publically state his opinion?

HALBERTAL:

Who says that he does not express an opinion? It has no impact. They may throw rocks at him too chas v’sholom.

KIKAR:

So what are we to do? Please tell me. If we have a separation of religion and state then they will stop throwing rocks?

HALBERTAL:

Please, I brought the example as a parable. Permit me to return to the issues at hand. The problem is far graver than concerns over rock-throwing. The fact that we do not serve in the IDF is a major issue. There are moral issues with this but nevertheless, we justify this policy. Do you begin to understand the moral implications for a mother who sends her son and he falls captive or is killed – and we have no part in this? Do you comprehend the seriousness of the matter at hand?

Please remember, I am stressing the need to act wisely and not about entitlement. On the other hand, the chareidim come and enter the political arena. The entire focus is to find funding for our institutions, but there is no military service. Not only don’t we accept the values of the secular community, we reject them but we take their money and then spit in their face. I am not in any way trying to justify them, but I do try to understand them – there is a difference.

If you look at a secular person, and I meet with them – what do they see? A letter from a rabbi saying don’t rent to Arabs. Rabbi Dov Lior who refuses to appear before a state court. Everything is negative and opposition. Forget rock-throwing but I am talking about values and day-to-day life. We educate our children against everything they believe in, and we don’t want to learn core subjects, the secular subjects, but the money; that we take. What do you want from them?

And then comes the Shalit prisoner deal. We say they have no Jewish identity. An entire nation watches as we release heinous terrorists, hundreds of despicable murderers, all to bring one Jewish soldier home. Tell me, this is not Jewish identity.

Bottom line, the Jewish identity lives in all of us contrary to what we may wish to believe, the secular too, and it may not express itself as we see and understand but ultimately, he will not be able to incite because there will be separation, and there will not be state funding as it exists today.

Now is not the time and place to get into it, but I do not call for cutting all funding, but it must be done differently, but not for now. It may not be called ‘budget’ but perhaps ‘culture’. Remember, there are models around the world of separation of religion and state and this is not for here and now.

KIKAR:

You angered Rav Eichler during your meeting. Don’t you think however that in reality, he represents authentic chareidi opinion, Torah Jewry as we call it?

HALBERTAL:

I respect him but he was exposed to a new idea, a different concept, and he was taken by surprise. The idea came from me, a chareidi person, something new. I think that he represents the right-wing chareidi Jewry but not the chareidi community at large. I think he is more extreme than the average chareidi, and that is his right-wing. I am not addressing the personal issue. I respect him but don’t agree with a word of his vision.

KIKAR:

Where do you plan to take your vision and your concepts? Do you plan to enter politics? Earlier, you mentioned Rav Chaim Cohen. Is he part of it? Are you hinting to something?

HALBERTAL:

I am not hinting – I am saying that Chaim Cohen will surprise many in the political realm. Speaking for myself, for now, I am trying to be heard.

KIKAR:

Do you see your concept connecting in some way with Aryeh Deri – possibly a future connection with [ultra-secularist] Yair Lapid?

HALBERTAL:

It would be good if this were. To the best of my knowledge, Aryeh supports separation of religion and state of one form of another. I believe if you ask him, this is what you will here. I have the utmost respect for him.

KIKAR:

So there is something that Ashkenazim and Sephardim agree upon [in a joking tone].

HALBERTAL:

Indeed. Aryeh is extremely talented and unique among politicians. I don’t disqualify any option. You asked me about Lapid. We have met. I believe he is serious. He is not his father, as he himself states. (His father is the late Minister of Justice Tommy Lapid, the founder of the anti-Chareidi Shinui Party). The concept of chareidi makes him [Yair] boil. He has a most interesting Jewish identity. One never knows and one must leave avenues and options available. One must respect and recognize the value of others, even values that one does not agree with.

KIKAR:

We cannot ignore recent battles undertaken by chareidi elected officials, including the battle around the graves at Barzilai Hospital and the effort to build a new wing. There was Emanuel and the Beis Yaakov School. The ongoing battle of MK Gafne and government interference in yeshivos. Do you think these battles are legitimate? Do you believe we brought them upon ourselves?

HALBERTAL:

To a certain extent yes but remember, and I think many are aware, that Rav Elyashiv in the case of Emanuel sided with the Sephardi position. It was an Internal Ashkenazi battle as well. The Rav stated the entire matter was handled poorly.

Ex-Director Of Goldman Charged in Insider Trading Case

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Rajat K. Gupta, a former Goldman Sachs director who surrendered to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday morning, was charged with insider trading, the latest development in the government’s multiyear crackdown on illegal activity on Wall Street.

Mr. Gupta, 62, is accused of leaking corporate secrets on Goldman Sachs to the hedge fund manager Raj Rajaratnam, the Galleon Group co-founder who was sentenced to 11 years in prison this month for making tens of millions of dollars through insider trading. A federal grand jury in Manhattan charged Mr. Gupta with one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and five counts of securities fraud, all related to tips on Goldman Sachs in 2008.

“Rajat Gupta was entrusted by some of the premier institutions of American business to sit inside their boardrooms, among their executives and directors, and receive their confidential information so that he could give advice and counsel for the benefit of their shareholders,” Preet Bharara, the United States attorney in Manhattan, said in a statement. “As alleged, he broke that trust and instead became the illegal eyes and ears in the boardroom for his friend and business associate, Raj Rajaratnam, who reaped enormous profits from Mr. Gupta’s breach of duty.”

In charging Mr. Gupta, the government is tying up one of the biggest loose ends resulting from the investigation into the Galleon Group, which began nearly five years ago at the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Gary P. Naftalis, a lawyer for Mr. Gupta, said in a statement on Tuesday: “The facts demonstrate that Mr. Gupta is an innocent man and that he acted with honesty and integrity.”

Authorities have broadly pursued insider trading on Wall Street, exacting guilty pleas from a chemist at the Food and Drug Administration, among others, as recently as this month. In the past two years, authorities have charged 56 people with insider trading, including Mr. Gupta; of those, 51 have pleaded guilty or have been convicted of swapping illegal tips about company earnings and other major corporate events. While the majority of those charged have been traders and analysts on Wall Street, Mr. Gupta, 62, is the first executive to be implicated from the upper echelons of corporate America.

The charges are a stunning reversal of fortunes for Mr. Gupta. A native of India, he graduated from Harvard Business School and had a global profile as an adviser to some of the nation’s most iconic companies. He served as a director at Goldman, Procter & Gamble and the parent company of American Airlines. In addition to his professional pedigree, Mr. Gupta was a noted philanthropist, serving in coveted posts with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Mr. Gupta’s case has been a tricky one for the government. Though his name came up repeatedly at Mr. Rajaratnam’s trial, both in testimony and in secretly recorded phone conversations, the Justice Department never filed charges against him. The S.E.C. filed an administrative action against Mr. Gupta, and he countersued. The agency later dropped the civil proceedings, but reserved the right to refile the case.

On Wednesday, the S.E.C. filed a complaint against Mr. Gupta and Mr. Rajaratnam, alleging an “extensive insider trading scheme.”

More On Beating Of Sikrikim Leader In Yerushalayim

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

According to Israel’s Reshet Bet Radio, the victim in the Wednesday morning chareidi lynching attack in Geula told people around him that rumors have it that the Gur Chassidim were coming to take revenge against him and others.

Speaking on Reshet Bet, Meah Shearim resident Yosef Kroizer lamented the events; adding the beatings do nothing to enhance the honor of the Gur or any other rebbe for that matter. He added that he is certain the Rebbe is unaware of the events as if they were in his defense, and sadly, those who perpetrate such actions do not seek approval from rabbonim before they act.

Kroizer concluded that when a neighbor with internet showed him the photos of the beaten chossid, it reminded him of the recent media photos of the slain Libyan leader. He stated there was no justification to come to shul on Shabbos morning looking for a fight, and certainly no justification to beat a man in the street, questioning where this gang violence is leading.

Jerusalem Police spokesman Shmulik Ben-Ruby stated the entire matter surrounds the real estate dispute in Batei Warsaw, involving Gur and the victim. He adds that as we speak, there are undercover agents inside Meah Shearim who are the eyes and ears of police, working to apprehend those responsible.

To date, nine people were arrested, all sikrikim, no one from Gur, but he expects additional arrests are imminent, but adding they do not know the identities of the Gerrer Chassidim responsible for the latest incident.

Ben-Ruby told Israel Radio that chareidi rabbis and leaders oppose this violence and it should be clear to all that this is simply unacceptable.

Attorney Yair Nehorai, who represents the victim, Avraham Chaim Hirschman and other sikrikim is critical of police, stating he sent a letter on October 19th warning that his client is in danger surrounding the ongoing dispute over Batei Warsaw and the hekdesh. He added that there are those who believe his client is responsible for incidents in which the integrity of the son of the Gerre Rebbe Shlita was compromised, and this just is not so.

He called on police to take immediate action towards preventing an escalation in the violence. Today he asks senior police commanders “Where were you. The writing was on the wall!”

Bnei Brak Sanitation Officials Remove Yomtov Schach

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Bnei Brak sanitation officials have been busy during recent days, removing the Sukkos schach from the community. City officials point out the schach has been removed and kept separate from all trash with the realization it was used for a mitzvah and should be discarded accordingly, in line with the view of the Mishnah Brurah.

City Hall reports that 39 tons of schach have been collected from within the city limits and it was discarded in an area that is separate from the city’s trash.

Pittsburgh: Frum Candidate For City Council Has Windows Shot Out With BB Gun

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Republican Josh Wander is running for the Pittsburgh city council, but on Tuesday, he dabbled on some carpentry while trying to use plywood to cover his windows.

Wander said at about 3 p.m. Tuesday, someone smashed the front windows of his campaign office on Forward Avenue in Squirrel Hill.

“It is my campaign headquarters, and it is very visible right on this major intersection. I have no doubt that it had some political implications,” Wander said.

According to a report by WPXI, Wander says police told him that the windows were probably shot at with a a BB gun.

Wander’s opponent, Democrat Corey O’Connor, however, said that there’s no way one of his supporters could have done it.

“My volunteers and my campaign, (we’re) just hard working individuals and we really have just got our message out there that we’re the best person for this job,” O’Connor said.

O’Connor said over the summer, a window was smashed in his campaign office just up the street.

“There must be somebody in the neighborhood doing something like this. I know there was somebody running around the streets a couple of weeks ago throwing rocks at people,” O’Connor said.

Wander, however, is convinced that it is the work of someone who doesn’t like his politics, and he wants it to stop.

“I hope that this doesn’t continue because whether it be an overzealous supporter of my opponent or whoever it may be, this is just shameful for the city of Pittsburgh,” Wander said.

Police are looking at surveillance footage from a gas station across the street, to try and apprehend the perpetrators.

Wander is Shomer Shabbos, and the only Republican running for Pittsburgh City Council.

Williamsburg-Boro Park Bus Writes Letter To DOT: Women No Longer To Be Forced To Sit In Back

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

The Orthodox Jewish-run Brooklyn bus company that stuck women in the back seats is putting an end to the controversial practice after a reprimand from the city.

The Private Transportation Corp. — which runs the Williamsburg-to- Borough Park B110 bus — wrote a letter to the Department of Transportation promising to instruct drivers not to move women to the back.

Operators pay the city more than $20,000 a year to run the line as part of a 30-year-old franchising agreement, which specifically forbids discrimination.

Israeli Yated Continues Digging A Hole Regarding Interview With Rav Moshe Sternbach

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

It appears that a ‘clarification’ appearing in the Wednesday, 28 Tishrei edition of Yated Ne’eman only serves to dig a larger hole for the newspaper following its Sukkos ‘interview’ with HaGaon HaRav Moshe Sternbuch Shlita, who is the “Raavad” of the Eidah Charedis, .

The story surrounds an interview that was published on erev Yomtov that was allegedly between the newspaper and Rav Sternbach, stating the interview was held in the Rav’s study with the knowledge and approval of the Rav’s family.

Prior to publication, the family of the Raavad released a statement that there was no interview and the claim that Yated sat with the Rav was simply not based in fact.

Now, realizing the need to correct the situation, Yated published a ‘clarification’ in the name of the columnist, stating “regarding the article on HaGaon HaRav Moshe Sternbuch Shlita in the erev Sukkos edition, the questions to the Rav were submitted in writing to the Rav’s son, Rav Asher Shlita, and the responses were returned to the newspaper by the Rav’s son in the Beis Din building. I was invited to the beis din to receive the responses. The article was sent to the family for approval prior to publication, and it was authorized with a number of requested changes. The interview was not conducted in the Rav’s office as was indicated”.

As far as members of the Gavaad’s family are concerned the clarification does little to set the record straight, with Kikar Shabbat quoting a statement released: “It appears that Yated has chosen to continue lying even while issuing a clarification. There is no doubt that the entire interview was plagiarized word for word from another newspaper”.

NOTE: The Israeli Yated is not associated in anyway with the American Yated.

747 With Supplies Heading From Israel To Turkey On Wednesday

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Israel’s response to yesterday’s (27 Tishrei) request for aid from Turkey was immediate, and efforts have been ongoing since Tuesday afternoon to prepare a 747 cargo plane to bring the badly-needed equipment to rescue workers in Turkey.

A powerful earthquake earlier in the week has resulted in much devastation as the death toll closes in on the 500 number; however it appears the decision that compelled Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to seek Israeli assistance was the growing anti-government sentiment among the thousands left homeless due to the quake.

Israel will not be sending rescue personnel, at least not today, for the request from Ankara was for equipment, including temporary homes that will offer shelter to the homeless. These are special structures made for this purpose, and they can be immediately connected to a water and electric grid, to enable those benefiting from the shelter to live relatively normally, capable of being placed down in almost any terrain.

Turkey only asked for aid in the form of equipment at this time, and therefore, the IDF’s Homefront Command search & rescue unit will not be dispatched.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu called Erdogan earlier in the week to express his sorrow over the natural disaster, offering any and all Israeli assistance. Some in Israel are somewhat optimistic, with the belief that such an event carries its own ‘diplomatic dynamics’ but most believe that Israel’s willingness to assist will not result in a mending in the current fractured diplomatic relations that exist between Israel and Turkey.
