NYC Comptroller Race – Scott Stringer Lands Jewish Press Endorsement

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

stringerThe Jewish Press today endorsed Scott Stringer for Comptroller, saying he was “ideally suited for the task.” The editorial board had a different take on Stringer’s opponent, Eliot Spitzer, saying, “it is hard to imagine a more unlikely fit for the office of comptroller.”

“Given the reputation Mr. Spitzer earned as attorney general and governor – he viewed his role and governor – he viewed his role in both capacities as that of a “steamroller” – It is hard to imagine a more unlikely fit for the office of comptroller,” The Jewish Press editorial wrote.

CD48 – FJCC Candidate Forum Turns Into Mudslinging Match

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

nyc2013 - 08-27 039[VIDEO IN EXTENDED ARTICLE] If you thought the mayoral and comptroller race was an adventure, you haven’t visited the neighborhood of Flatbush/Midwood in Brooklyn. A candidate forum between the Democratic candidates vying to replace the seat obtained by Councilman Mike Nelson, in the 48th Council District, turned fiery and ugly, notwithstanding the usual civilized manner seen at forums across the city in this year’s election.

The debate between the candidates – Chaim Deutsch, Ari Kagan, Igor Oberman and Theresa Scavo – was hosted by the Flatbush Jewish Community Coalition (FJCC), who held a similar event for the Democratic mayoral candidates, at Young Israel of Midwood.

While the candidates agreed on many issues as it pertains to the Jewish community, Ari Kagan, the Democratic District leader of the 45th Assembly District, was constantly attack by his rivals and members of the audience for accepting the UFT endorsement. Igor Oberman, another Russian candidate, accused Mr. Kagan of pandering on the issue of school vouchers while accepting the UFT’s anti-private schools endorsement. Nevertheless, Mr. Kagan stood his ground, claiming he would not be beholden to any endorsement made in this race. He further pledged to push for a tuition tax credit, a viable solution to the high cost of tuition in the boundaries of the constitution.

“I’m here telling you … straight,” charged candidate Igor Oberman. “I fear for everybody in this room who is able to listen to these ‘bubba meises’ and not understand what is really happening.”

The debate got ugly towards the end, when Chaim Deutsch stood up accusing Mr. Kagan for fooling voters in the district by printing his name ‘Ari’ (formerly known as Arkady) in Hebrew, on fliers and campaign ads, making it look like he’s the Orthodox candidate in the race. “I will not be like my opponent … Mr. Ari Kagan, advertising as the name ‘Ari’ in Hebrew, making people think he is the Orthodox candidate,” Mr. Deutsch said. “I will not fool anyone. I will not lie to you.”

“I am very proud of my name. I legally changed my name in 2002 before I ran for anything. I never knew that writing my name in Hebrew is wrong. What is wrong with you, Chaim?” Mr. Kagan shot back.

Mr. Deutsch also attacked Ms. Scavo for slamming ‘seniors’ sleeping at community board 15 meetings and for having Mike Geller, the former District leader in the 45th AD, pen articles in favor of Ms. Scavo in the Image Magazine under a pen name ‘Kim Grell’.

“I have no intentions of getting down in the mud with anyone of these three,” Ms. Scavo angrily responded. “I am finding this so disgusting. The three of you are behaving like children.”

IDF Chief & Defense Minister Comment on Syrian Threat

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

gantzAt an annual ceremony honoring fallen soldiers, Minister of Defense Moshe Ya’alon and Chief of the General Staff Lieutenant-General Benny Gantz discussed the situation in the Middle East and Syria, and the IDF’s duty to protect the State of Israel.

“The Middle East has been going through a historic upheaval these past few years where waves of armed and dangerous terror groups have come into the picture, posing many challenges,” said Defense Minister Ya’alon. “However there hasn’t been a better expression of the dangers of extremism, from the south to the north, than the pictures that were broadcast last week from Syria, where innocent civilians are being slaughtered without any intervention from Bashar al-Assad’s regime.”

In reference to the use of chemical weapons, Ya’alon said: “I am sure that every person is shocked by these scenes of children dying in excruciating pain as a result of Assad’s forces using, and not for the first time, chemical weapons to kill. Today, the civilized world understands the power that he has. This axis of evil begins in Tehran, goes through Damascus and is based in Beirut. Crimes against humanity are its very nature.”

Ya’alon continued to discuss the threats facing Israel. “We are aware of the threats developing before our very eyes in the Middle East and we hear all of the threats being voiced toward the State of Israel, but we are not getting involved in the bloody conflict going on in Syria and other conflicts in the Middle East,” Ya’alon emphasized. “In the face of these threats, we are acting responsibly and considerately but we are also saying loud and clear: whoever dares to test us will face the might of the IDF.”

IDF Chief Gantz said that the IDF is committed to the security of Israeli civilians. “Now more than ever, our defenses are fortified. The nations of the world have a moral and ethical obligation to stand against the hideous crimes being committed against our innocent neighbors right across the border.”

“We will not fan the winds of war, not within our borders or around us, but we will exercise the unshakable duty to protect the State of Israel from threats surrounding if needed,” he said. “Those who seek to harm us will do so in a way that is stronger and more aggressive than ever. Our enemies know that we are ready to defend our citizens in every way, against every threat and in every scenario possible.”

Colo. Lawmakers Facing Recalls Get Big Money From NYC Mayor Bloomberg

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

bloCampaigns supporting Colorado Democratic legislators facing recalls over new gun restrictions have raised nearly $2 million.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and billionaire philanthropist Eli Broad have each contributed large sums to Taxpayers for Responsible Democracy, which is working to keep Senate President John Morse of Colorado Springs and Pueblo Sen. Angela Giron in office. Bloomberg, who has advocated for stricter gun laws, contributed $350,000 and Broad $250,000.

Pueblo United for Angela has raised $586,000 and A Whole Lot of People for John Morse $606,000, according to state campaign filings Tuesday. Taxpayers for Responsible Democracy has raised $708,000.

The National Rifle Association has spent about $108,600 to oppose the lawmakers. It’s among the largest contributors to opponents of Giron and Morse.

White House Enlists Bill Clinton on Health Care

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

clobThe White House is enlisting former President Bill Clinton’s help in explaining President Barack Obama’s health care law as a key phase of the reform nears.

Clinton will speak about the law on Sept. 4 at his presidential library in Little Rock, Ark. His remarks come less than one month before the public can start signing up for the health care exchanges, which will be crucial to the law’s success or failure.

Obama and Clinton have become increasingly close in recent years. After last year’s Democratic national convention, Obama aides dubbed Clinton the “secretary of explaining stuff” because of his convention speech’s broad defense of the president’s policies.

Israel: Reservists Being Called to Duty

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

idfsAfter meeting for several hours on Wednesday, 22 Elul 5773, the Security Cabinet during the afternoon announced approval for the IDF to begin calling up a limited number of reservists. While the prudent step is being taken, the IDF and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon continue to stress at the time being, there is no reason for anyone to break from their daily routine.

The military stresses it stands ready “for any eventuality” as the nation’s leaders continue to release messages of calm.

With the U.S. threatening to attack Syria over its alleged use of chemical weapons, Israel fears that Syria may respond with an attack on Israel.

The IDF says the mobilization will include civil-defense units and reservists in air and rocket-defense units.

Alarming Increase in Food Smuggling in Israel Ahead of Rosh Hashanah

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

mAbout 60kg (132 lbs) of fresh fish was confiscated on Monday, 20 Elul 5773 after it was learned it was transported in a cardboard box, without refrigeration, on a bus from to Jerusalem. The person delivering the fish to the capital placed it in the luggage compartment of a bus on a hot summer day. The fish originated in the Kinneret in northern Israel.

Border police conducting a routine security inspection on the bus entering the capital were not pleased with the looks of the carton, deciding it must be opened. Inspectors arriving on the scene stated that without a doubt the fish were no longer in an edible state.

The bus driver, a 40-year-old Tiveria resident, was detained for questioning after it was determined that he was the smuggler, looking to make some extra money before Rosh Hashanah. He admitted that it was he who placed the carton of fish in the bus’ luggage compartment. The fish were taken to be destroyed.

EGGS IN YERUSHALAYIM

Last week authorities apprehended two 17-year-olds after changing the expiration date on tens of thousands of eggs that expired in 2010!

Police patrolling the area heard noise in an underground parking lot of a building in the Reches Shlomo area of Yerushalayim. The eggs already had quite the foul odor but the youths seeking to make some serious money were undeterred. They were taken into custody and the eggs destroyed.

BAD MEAT IN SERIOUS QUANTITIES

And in yet another case, 12,000 portions of inedible meat were confiscated in Gush Dan and Be’er Tuvia as they were heading to stores for retail sale. A standard inspection of the cargo on board a truck heading to Be’er Tuvia revealed the health hazard. Veterinary Services official Dr. Vadim Itzkowitz explains the meat was frozen but it did not have any identifying tags whatsoever. He added when it began to defrost the distinctive odor gave it away.

And a short time later, in a standard stop check of trucks making deliveries in the Gush Dan area, a vehicle transporting 4,000 portions of inedible meats was apprehended. Health officials simply stated the meat “was not fit for human consumption” without getting into details.

Israel: Gas Mask System Pick Up and Deliveries Collapse

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

gmaEstimates range from “hundreds” to “thousands” of residents from the Gush Dan area waiting for gas masks as the IDF Homefront Command is clearly ill prepared for the influx of residents. To the amazement of the nation, the Homefront Command has failed to anticipate the increase in requests for gas masks amid reports of an imminent military action involving Syria.

Phone lines collapsed earlier this morning and callers to the Homefront Command operators got nowhere. The same was the case with the Israel Postal Authority, which handles deliveries of the gas mask kits. The Postal Authority’s website has been unresponsive too.

In Beersheva, residents of the Negev’s capital are asking why the Homefront Command has not even set up a gas mask station in the city, compelling them to travel north to Ashkelon, where the lines are endless and chaotic as is reported in Tel Aviv.

Citizens waiting in line in the Tel Aviv area are losing it as there are countless crying children and babies and while personnel manning the station are doing their best, they are clearly outnumbered and not equipped to address the flow of residents. The Tel Aviv center is the only center serving the entire Gush Dan area. The same situation is reported in the Haifa center.

One can only assume that when the smoke of the Syrian conflict clears there will be a state or ministerial committee to probe the failure, and the blame will be assigned, but unfortunately, other than providing news feed for the media, little if anything every changes. The incompetence seems to prevail.

N.J. Court: Text Recipients Can Be Held Liable In Texting-And-Driving Accidents

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

textThe following is via WCBSTV:

Drivers in New Jersey were left stunned, after state Appeals Court judges found that when a driver is texting and causes an accident, the recipient of the texts can also be held liable for negligence.

As CBS 2’s Hazel Sanchez reported Tuesday night, the decision stemmed from a 2009 accident where a 17-year-old girl texted a friend just before that friend crashed his pickup truck into a Morris County couple on a motorcycle.

The man and woman on the motorcycle, David and Linda Kubert, both lost parts of their legs. They sued not only the truck’s driver, but also the girl who was texting him.

On Tuesday, a state Appeals Court ruled that the girl in that particular case could not be held liable. But it also ruled “that a person sending text messages has a duty not to text someone who is driving if the texter knows, or has special reason to know, the recipient will view the text while driving.”

Judges hope that making a legal responsibility for texting to drivers will make the public more aware of the dangers of texting and driving.

Syria Says ‘Terrorists’ Will Strike Europe With Chemical Weapons

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

chwSyria’s deputy foreign minister said on Wednesday that the United States, Britain and France helped “terrorists” use chemical weapons in Syria, and that the same groups would soon use them against Europe.

Speaking to reporters outside the Four Seasons hotel in Damascus, Faisal Maqdad said he had presented U.N. chemical weapons inspectors with evidence that “armed terrorist groups” had used sarin gas in all the sites of alleged attacks.

“We repeat that the terrorist groups are the ones that used (chemical weapons) with the help of the United States, the United Kingdom and France, and this has to stop,” he said. “This means these chemical weapons will soon be used by the same groups against the people of Europe,” he added.

NYPD Secretly Labels Mosques As Terror Organizations [UPDATED]

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

nypdtThe New York Police Department has secretly labeled entire mosques as terrorist organizations, a designation that allows police to use informants to record sermons and spy on imams, often without specific evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

Designating an entire mosque as a terrorism enterprise means that anyone who attends prayer services there is a potential subject of an investigation and fair game for surveillance.

Since the 9/11 attacks, the NYPD has opened at least a dozen “terrorism enterprise investigations” into mosques, according to interviews and confidential police documents. The TEI, as it is known, is a police tool intended to help investigate terrorist cells and the like.

Many TEIs stretch for years, allowing surveillance to continue even though the NYPD has never criminally charged a mosque or Islamic organization with operating as a terrorism enterprise.

The documents show in detail how, in its hunt for terrorists, the NYPD investigated countless innocent New York Muslims and put information about them in secret police files. As a tactic, opening an enterprise investigation on a mosque is so potentially invasive that while the NYPD conducted at least a dozen, the FBI never did one, according to interviews with federal law enforcement officials.

The strategy has allowed the NYPD to send undercover officers into mosques and attempt to plant informants on the boards of mosques and at least one prominent Arab-American group in Brooklyn, whose executive director has worked with city officials, including Bill de Blasio, a front-runner for mayor.

The revelations about the NYPD’s massive spying operations are in documents recently obtained by The Associated Press and part of a new book, “Enemies Within: Inside the NYPD’s Secret Spying Unit and bin Laden’s Final Plot Against America.” The book by AP reporters Matt Apuzzo and Adam Goldman is based on hundreds of previously unpublished police files and interviews with current and former NYPD, CIA and FBI officials.

The disclosures come as the NYPD is fighting off lawsuits accusing it of engaging in racial profiling while combating crime. Earlier this month, a judge ruled that the department’s use of the stop-and-frisk tactic was unconstitutional.

The American Civil Liberties Union and two other groups have sued, saying the Muslim spying programs are unconstitutional and make Muslims afraid to practice their faith without police scrutiny.

Both Mayor Mike Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly have denied those accusations. Speaking Wednesday on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Kelly reminded people that his intelligence-gathering programs began in the wake of 9/11.

“We follow leads wherever they take us,” Kelly said. “We’re not intimidated as to wherever that lead takes us. And we’re doing that to protect the people of New York City.”

___

The NYPD did not limit its operations to collecting information on those who attended the mosques or led prayers. The department sought also to put people on the boards of New York’s Islamic institutions to fill intelligence gaps.

One confidential NYPD document shows police wanted to put informants in leadership positions at mosques and other organizations, including the Arab American Association of New York in Brooklyn, a secular social-service organization.

Linda Sarsour, the executive director, said her group helps new immigrants adjust to life in the U.S. It was not clear whether the department was successful in its plans.

The document, which appears to have been created around 2009, was prepared for Kelly and distributed to the NYPD’s debriefing unit, which helped identify possible informants.

Around that time, Kelly was handing out medals to the Arab American Association’s soccer team, Brooklyn United, smiling and congratulating its players for winning the NYPD’s soccer league.

Sarsour, a Muslim who has met with Kelly many times, said she felt betrayed.

“It creates mistrust in our organizations,” said Sarsour, who was born and raised in Brooklyn. “It makes one wonder and question who is sitting on the boards of the institutions where we work and pray.”

___

Before the NYPD could target mosques as terrorist groups, it had to persuade a federal judge to rewrite rules governing how police can monitor speech protected by the First Amendment.

The rules stemmed from a 1971 lawsuit, dubbed the Handschu case after lead plaintiff Barbara Handschu, over how the NYPD spied on protesters and liberals during the Vietnam War era.

David Cohen, a former CIA executive who became NYPD’s deputy commissioner for intelligence in 2002, said the old rules didn’t apply to fighting against terrorism.

Cohen told the judge that mosques could be used “to shield the work of terrorists from law enforcement scrutiny by taking advantage of restrictions on the investigation of First Amendment activity.”

NYPD lawyers proposed a new tactic, the TEI, that allowed officers to monitor political or religious speech whenever the “facts or circumstances reasonably indicate” that groups of two or more people were involved in plotting terrorism or other violent crime.

The judge rewrote the Handschu rules in 2003. In the first eight months under the new rules, the NYPD’s Intelligence Division opened at least 15 secret terrorism enterprise investigations, documents show. At least 10 targeted mosques.

Doing so allowed police, in effect, to treat anyone who attends prayer services as a potential suspect. Sermons, ordinarily protected by the First Amendment, could be monitored and recorded.

Among the mosques targeted as early as 2003 was the Islamic Society of Bay Ridge.

“I have never felt free in the United States. The documents tell me I am right,” Zein Rimawi, one of the Bay Ridge mosque’s leaders, said after reviewing an NYPD document describing his mosque as a terrorist enterprise.

Rimawi, 59, came to the U.S. decades ago from Israel’s West Bank.

“Ray Kelly, shame on him,” he said. “I am American.”

___

The NYPD believed the tactics were necessary to keep the city safe, a view that sometimes put it at odds with the FBI.

In August 2003, Cohen asked the FBI to install eavesdropping equipment inside a mosque called Masjid al-Farooq, including its prayer room.

Al-Farooq had a long history of radical ties. Omar Abdel Rahman, the blind Egyptian sheik who was convicted of plotting to blow up New York City landmarks, once preached briefly at Al-Farooq. Invited preachers raged against Israel, the United States and the Bush administration’s war on terror.

One of Cohen’s informants said an imam from another mosque had delivered $30,000 to an al-Farooq leader, and the NYPD suspected the money was for terrorism.

But Amy Jo Lyons, the FBI assistant special agent in charge for counterterrorism, refused to bug the mosque. She said the federal law wouldn’t permit it.

The NYPD made other arrangements. Cohen’s informants began to carry recording devices into mosques under investigation. They hid microphones in wristwatches and the electronic key fobs used to unlock car doors.

Even under a TEI, a prosecutor and a judge would have to approve bugging a mosque. But the informant taping was legal because New York law allows any party to record a conversation, even without consent from the others. Like the Islamic Society of Bay Ridge, the NYPD never demonstrated in court that al-Farooq was a terrorist enterprise but that didn’t stop the police from spying on the mosques for years.

And under the new Handschu guidelines, no one outside the NYPD could question the secret practice.

Martin Stolar, one of the lawyers in the Handschu case, said it’s clear the NYPD used enterprise investigations to justify open-ended surveillance. The NYPD should only tape conversations about building bombs or plotting attacks, he said.

“Every Muslim is a potential terrorist? It is completely unacceptable,” he said. “It really tarnishes all of us and tarnishes our system of values.”

___

Al-Ansar Center, a windowless Sunni mosque, opened in Brooklyn several years ago, attracting young Arabs and South Asians. NYPD officers feared the mosque was a breeding ground for terrorists, so informants kept tabs on it.

One NYPD report noted that members were fixing up the basement, turning it into a gym.

“They also want to start Jiujitsu classes,” it said.

The NYPD was particularly alarmed about Mohammad Elshinawy, 26, an Islamic teacher at several New York mosques, including Al-Ansar. Elshinawy was a Salafist — a follower of a puritanical Islamic movement — whose father was an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center attacks, according to NYPD documents.

The FBI also investigated whether Elshinawy recruited people to wage violent jihad overseas. But the two agencies investigated him very differently.

The FBI closed the case after many months without any charges. Federal investigators never infiltrated Al-Ansar.

“Nobody had any information the mosque was engaged in terrorism activities,” a former federal law enforcement official recalled, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to discuss the investigation.

The NYPD wasn’t convinced. A 2008 surveillance document described Elshinawy as “a young spiritual leader (who) lectures and gives speeches at dozens of venues” and noted, “He has orchestrated camping trips and paintball trips.”

The NYPD deemed him a threat in part because “he is so highly regarded by so many young and impressionable individuals.”

No part of Elshinawy’s life was out of bounds. His mosque was the target of a TEI. The NYPD conducted surveillance at his wedding. An informant recorded the wedding and police videotaped everyone who came and went.

“We have nothing on the lucky bride at this time but hopefully will learn about her at the service,” one lieutenant wrote.

Four years later, the NYPD was still watching Elshinawy without charging him. He is now a plaintiff in the ACLU lawsuit against the NYPD.

“These new NYPD spying disclosures confirm the experiences and worst fears of New York’s Muslims,” ACLU lawyer Hina Shamsi said. “From houses of worship to a wedding, there’s no area of New York Muslim religious or personal life that the NYPD has not invaded through its bias-based surveillance policy.”

Williamsburg Leader Guarantees 10,000 Votes For Bill Thompson

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

20130828-022947.jpg

Bill Thompson took the bet. Picking up yet another endorsement in the race for mayor of NYC, Bill Thompson took the word of a power broker in the Hasidic Jewish community, at least in parts of Williamsburg, that his endorsement would deliver more than 10,000 votes to Satmar’s, along with other communities, chosen candidate Bill Thompson.

“We are all committed to bringing that vote out,” Rabbi Neiderman, leader of the United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg representing the Zalonim sect of Satmar, promised. “Look at our record. That vote has delivered, in some obscured elections, more than 10 thousand votes. We have the votes… We are all here to ensure that our next mayor is the honorable Billy Thompson.”

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDqTu9NL970&w=560&h=315]

“People trust the leadership in the community and people understand they have been here for years,” said Rabbi David Niederman. “This community, thank God, has not only survived but really progressed over here so people believe [the leadership] made the right decision.”

The event went awry as one heckler, identified as Yoel Zimmerman, interrupted one of the speakers introducing Mr. Thompson, yelling “Rabbi Neiderman doesn’t represent the community’s vote.” Onlookers quickly grabbed the man and shuffled him forcefully away from the gathering at the corner of Rodney Street and Lee Avenue in Williamsburg, my colleague Josh Nathan-Kazis described the incident.

Approached after the rally, Zimmerman was exceptionally reserved. “We are traditional Jews and we are against the immorality,” he told the Forward.

Obama Taps Former Aides For Intel Review Panel

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

spyPresident Barack Obama on Tuesday named the members of a new intelligence review panel aimed at boosting public confidence in U.S. surveillance programs, tapping a group of former White House officials and academics with close current and past ties to his administration.

Michael Morrell, Obama’s former CIA deputy director, will serve on the panel, the White House said. Morrell temporarily ran the agency after former CIA Director David Petraeus resigned, but was passed over to be his replacement. Morrell stepped down from the CIA on Aug. 9, the same day Obama announced he would create the review panel.

The White House unveiled the new members Tuesday with little fanfare in a statement announcing that Obama had held a meeting with the group. The meeting was not included on Obama’s public schedule.

The idea behind the appointments is for an outside group of experts in national security, privacy and civil liberties to review U.S. surveillance and communications technologies with an eye toward the proper balance between protecting national security and preserving domestic and foreign trust in how the U.S. government operates. It’s one of a series of reforms Obama promised earlier this month to allay concerns over programs exposed by National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden.

“It’s not enough for me, as president, to have confidence in these programs. The American people need to have confidence in them as well,” Obama had said earlier. He subsequently signed a memorandum that entrusted National Intelligence Director James Clapper to establish the panel.

Also on the panel is Cass Sunstein, a former Obama administration official who is married to Obama’s new U.N. ambassador, Samantha Power. Richard Clarke, a former White House cybersecurity adviser during the Clinton administration who campaigned for Obama, is another member. Peter Swire, a professor who worked on privacy issues in the Clinton administration and economic issues early in the Obama administration, will also serve on the panel.

The fifth member is Geoffrey Stone, who taught law with Obama at the University of Chicago. A longtime Obama supporter and self-described informal adviser to Obama’s 2008 campaign, Stone later criticized the president for failing to scale back Bush-era policies on government transparency.

After reviewing U.S. policies, the group will brief Obama on its findings within 60 days, the White House said. A final report and recommendations are due in mid-December.

Shuvu Banim Suspects Remain Behind Bars

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

prisonThe Jerusalem Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 21 Elul 5773 extended the remand of Shuvu Banim Yeshiva suspects Nachman Berland and his son Nosson until Tuesday, 29 Elul. They are the main suspects in an investigation alleging tax fraud and other while collar crimes. Two other suspects were also held over until Tuesday. The court will reevaluate their incarceration ahead of Rosh Hashanah.

The suspects were arrested about two months ago after investigators and tax agents deiced their clandestine investigation yielded sufficient evidence.

Members of the community report that Rabbi Eliezer Berland, Nachman’s father, is monitoring events from Morocco, where he is living. At present, it appears highly unlikely that these members of the Berland family will be celebrating Rosh Hashanah in Uman as is their minhag.
