Hagon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky: Jerusalem’s Old City is the Safest Place in Yerushalayim

kanAn avreich asked HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita if he should continue learning in a kollel in Jerusalem’s Old City during this security crisis and was told the Old City of Yerushalayim is the safest place.

Rav Kanievsky in recent weeks has been misquoted as instructing people to refrain visiting the Old City but clarifications were released explaining the Gadol Hador feels one should use protected routes and not enter the Old City via gates that may not be as safe as those manned by police and security forces.

Rav Chaim reportedly instructed the avreich to consult with HaGaon HaRav Zilberstein Shlita, who in turn consulted with a senior Jerusalem police commander. After hearing of the unprecedented security in and around the Old City for persons visiting the Kosel and the Jewish Quarter, the avreich was told “the Old City is the safest place in Jerusalem today”.

Rav Chaim then instructed the avreich to adhere to the words of Rav Zilberstein, who bases his evaluation on information received from a senior Israel Police official.

Israel Police Old City Commander Doron Turgeman upon hearing of the ruling from Bnei Brak issued a call to the tzibur at large to continue visiting the Kosel and the Old City, which is the safest place that has a great deal of security personnel at all times.
