President Donald Trump said Monday that the United States has received no indication from Iran that it is formally withdrawing from ongoing negotiations, despite reports from Iranian state-linked media claiming Tehran is suspending talks over Israeli military operations in Lebanon.
Speaking to NBC News, Trump dismissed concerns about a possible breakdown in diplomacy and suggested that a pause in discussions may not necessarily be a negative development.
“I think we’ve been talking too much if you want to know the truth,” Trump said. “I think going silent would be very good, and that could be for a long time.”
The president emphasized that a reduction in diplomatic contacts would not automatically lead to military action.
“It doesn’t mean we’re going to go and start dropping bombs all over there,” Trump said. “We’ll just go silent. We’ll keep the blockade. Blockade is a piece of steel.”
Trump also indicated that Washington believes time is on its side, arguing that Iran continues to suffer severe economic damage under sanctions and restrictions.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, which is closely associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, reported Monday that Tehran is halting indirect negotiations with the United States in protest of Israel’s ongoing military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
According to the report, Iran objects to what it described as the “continued crimes of the Zionist regime in Lebanon.”
The report followed a warning issued by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who insisted that Lebanon must be included under the umbrella of the existing U.S.-Iran ceasefire arrangement.
“The United States and Israel bear responsibility for the consequences of any breach of the truce,” Araghchi wrote on social media.
The conflicting statements highlight growing uncertainty surrounding the future of the negotiations, which have been aimed at securing a broader agreement following months of regional conflict and escalating tensions between Israel, Iran, and Hezbollah.
