President Trump announced that a U.S.-Iran agreement is expected to be signed Sunday, saying the deal would prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump added that no money would change hands under the agreement and said the U.S. would eventually remove and destroy Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile.
Axios reports that U.S. and Iranian officials, with mediation from Pakistan and Qatar, are expected to hold a virtual meeting Sunday to electronically sign a memorandum of understanding extending the ceasefire by 60 days, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and launching negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.
According to Israel Hayom, Israel will not be required to sign the agreement and would retain the right to defend itself, though military action would need to be coordinated with the United States. The report adds that if no final agreement is reached and Iran resumes hostile actions or maintains its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, regime change would remain on the table.
Regarding Lebanon, the proposed memorandum would preserve Israel’s right to self-defense and to strike current or emerging threats. Iran reportedly sought an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon but did not secure that demand.
Meanwhile, a senior Israeli official told Ynet that It’s a bad agreement. No one is happy with it. They understand that it’s not good for us and harms Israeli interests.
What’s disturbing is that Israel can’t influence, and its voice is not heard.
It’s mainly a “World Cup agreement-250th anniversary celebrations for Trump’s 80th birthday.”
The goal is to buy some quiet for all the big events happening in the U.S. right now. Not really something that will hold water.
