We have the minhag to get into a family fight by the friday night meal. And to fall asleep before bentching. I once wanted to change it, but was told it’s dangerous to mess around with family minhagim.

koillel101: There are many offices which block social networking sites and the like to reduce down-time. If your company didn’t chances are they don’t mind occasionally as long as you are for the most part fulfilling your tasks and being productive.

11:30 PM in Israel now. I’m in middle of blaring YWN Radio (it actually works again), and my son is practicing his drumming.

Oh wait catch you later got an angry neighbor at the door.

    OK I’m back

Seriously If only I had neighbors who woke me up at 8:15 AM, I wouldn’t miss Shachris as often. I would actually pay them to do it.

“I would happily send my kid to a school that had larger classes, no air conditioning, no science lab, no gym, etc. – if it existed.”

Bais Mikroh Elementary in Monsey has a very high quality curriculum and standards, however they manage to cut back on costs by implementing some of the things you mentioned. (from your list the only one they have is A/C.) This should be your first choice if you live in monsey. Being a Bais Mikroh alumni and Parent, I can assure you that in no way are the kids missing out by lacking an indoor gym or a high tech science lab.

Most of these things are not on forms. You have to degrade yourself to have an interview with the entire tuition committee. You sit there telling them about every single aspect of your financial situation. I feel that they should at least make them one-on-one interviews to spare the individual embarrassment rather sitting in front of 5-10 people

Ocho on its own means 8. When you put the two words together guy+ocho it is actually a slang and not the literal translation.

A fully competent teacher knows how to keep all the kids on track without having to give any homework, as they ingrain all the material into the students head during the school day. They will still usually give a minimal amount of homework just to teach the kid responsibility and be able to keep their focus on schoolwork even at home. However most High Schools (especially ones with dorms) there would be no need for that, besides for the fact that they have almost no spare time whatsoever.

Many places will ask about summer arrangements, Pesach or other vacations(hotels). They will most probably ask how much you pay for tuition for other kids (if applicable). Some places will go so far as to ask where you shop for clothing. (to determine your lifestyle- such as whether you shop in Gap or Wall-Mart)

sacrilege seems to have got it right. I am a born and bred New Yorker. Of all the times I had to stay OOT (and i have been in some OOT places for 3-4 months at a time) I felt so awkward when strangers were overly polite. Whenever I get back to the hustle and bustle of New York City, I appreciate the ability to come and go and do my own thing without nosy or well-meaning people bothering me, as everyone in NY is too busy with their own life to notice you.

I work in telemarketing for a large financial institution. While I am on the phone I usually surf the web. It occurred to me that many times when you call a technical support center, or any call center for that matter (such as a bank) the typing on the keyboard you hear in the backround is not necessarily them looking up your information, rather they are updating their Facebook page or chatting with their friends. I know because I do this.

Most of the times, the husband is embarrassed to admit he is the weaker (or more vulnerable) one in the relationship. Or he doesn’t realize the abuse due to the fact that he associates abuse with the male against the female. It doesn’t register in his mind that he’s being abused until the irreversible emotional damage has been done. He assumes the whole time that shes just being overly emotional or overreacting.

oomis1105 most of the names you posted although not common in the diaspora, are very common typical names by many Israelis. to add my two-cents to the pot, my favorites atypical names are: Kasriel, yehonadav, aminadav, Kavod, Kapel, hagadol, and getzel.(sadly this last one isn’t as uncommon as it should be) sorry, no offense.
