Trump might be alot of things, but Anti-Semite he is not

A real anti-semite would not only not allow their daughter to marry a jew, let alone convert to one (One of the Nuremberg laws was to prohibit cohabitation between jews and aryans).

Housing subsidies are not the same as kollel subsidies. Unfortunatly with the high cost of housing, many israelis need housing subsidies and its not just DL who live in the settlements. Charedim and Chilonim live there too.

Most Israelis cannot live in Arad and need to live in the Tel Aviv and/or Jerusalem area because of jobs and other reasons.

So the Housing vs kollel argument is comparable

A private “Kosher Gym” is legal meaning enforced dressed codes, seperate evengts etc. A public one is not

Depends who the audience is, for many people the more charedi lifestyle is not going to happend and they think judaism is like that. When they see a more moderate version where one can be more like everyone else and be relgious they are open to the idea more whereas they are not open to the idea of dressing and living in 18th century style. They might abhore Dvekas, Niggunim and Chazanusm music

However for the more Charedi people it is not good as it might more open them to the outside world

I was actually suprised the Kingsbay Y only has 2 hours a week for men and 2 hours a week for women. I dont begrduge them for having seperate hours, I think they should have more if the people who belong want it. The Borough Park one has more hours. The Y is a private institution and can do whatever the members want

There are lots of things tax payers pay for that you cannot use. Should people pay for a Library if they dont go, Should people without Kids pay for schools?

Should we pay for EMS when we use Hatzolah?

Should people who dont drive pay for roads.

That is the price we pay for living in a free society, we have to pay for stuff we dont need and dont want.

Nobody is preventing anyone from using the pool, People are choosing not to use it.

Its $550 for a family of unlimted size for an entire year.

People seem to have no problem spending extra money on chumras because they feel its important, if they feel a pool is important they can spend the money

$550 is about $11 a week. Drink less coffee and go to the pool. Its a mitzvah to learn to swim, its not a mitzvah to drink Coffee.

Ive noticed on the main news paper there are picture-logs of people packing up and going to the Catskills for the summer. it is not cheap to go there. I know I dont go there. There is a place to save $550 and join the Y for all year round swimming

    From the website

    Fee Adjustments

The Boro Park Y is a community-based agency, and it is our goal to serve all the members, from infants through senior adults.

In the case of financial difficulty, scholarships may be arranged confidentially. There are no government funds to cover membership, and we ask all members who are applying for a scholarship to complete the forms entirely and truthfully. The scholarships offered are modest, to enable us to provide assistance to as many people who apply. Please submit the forms with as much information as you can provide so that the committee can treat your application with respect and consideration.

frum people didnt like EMS , so they started Hatzloh

Frum people didnt like Public School so they started the yeshiva system

frum people didnt like the Public bus service so they started their own bus (The B110 bus)

There is no reason a pool cannot be built in Williamsburg for the same reason, besides learning to swim is a HALACHA.

Dont think Giverim in Williamsvburg are strongly urged to put their money in certain charities, there is no reason some of that money cant be used for a pool (The pool could be built in the basement of a Shul or Yeshiva with a seperate entrance)

I was recently in Williamsburg, I saw alot of construction there, There isnt a shortage of money to build stuff and if a Y is desired to be build, it could surely be built. There are enough people who can afford to pay for this and its no big deal for them.

I think the one in Crown Heights had men only hours (There was a pool in Crown heights too)

I still stand by my statement that the community should spend a few million, shouldnt cost more than that and make their own pool like they did in Borough Park. There is no reason not to, there are plenty of Giverim who could afford it

Uvda D’chol is a legitimate thing, what I am discussing is what are the limits. Its one thing to say riding a Biclycle or an umbrella is Uvda D’chol its quote another to say you cant speak english or talk about the baseball game (Baseball game is a metaphor for any non “Shabbosdick” topic)

Not to harp on the bicylcles, but when you start implicitly banning stuff on shabbos, it is a slipperly slope. You can ban something that is permitted and someone finds out that you are calling a chumra a Halacha, they wont belive you on anything you might say.

I have heard many things called “Ovda D’chol” that are really pushing the boundaries. According to some reading Shakespeare is Uvda D’chol or talking about the Baseball game .

Most high school students do not take Latin, Greek or Hebrew, however they do take a foreign langugage usually Spanish or french which are romance languages derived from latin.

‘Fun” stuff has many uses in life, Sports teaches teamwork and working with others. Learning an instrument has other uses.

Unfortunatly many frum school barely teach English and their students are barely literate in English and cant even fill out an application for a job or medical forms

yiddish & german language is very similar & yiddish speaking started from the days in germany. you can probably make your way around germany if you know yiddish well

    Somewhat

that is sort of how the Nazi’s YMSH were able to order the jews in the camps. Most of the jews spoke Yiddish (many also spoke German)

German grammar is very difficult so its not so easy for a yiddish speaker to master German

English IS from French. Asbout 30-40% of English words come from French. Even though its a Germanic language. its easier for an english speaker to learn a Romance language than it is to learn German

That is why many times you can figure out Spanish words even though they are in Spanish. Look at unrelated languages, you cannot figure out the words.

French is not a “Pure Language” it evolved from latin as did all the Romance languages

German evolved from old German , as did old english, however with the influx of French words its very different

But I’m curious if any of those who believe “Hareidism” is indeed a “modern phenomenon” can name any of the founders of this new movement, and how their beliefs differed from those of their teachers.

Charedism today is basically 2 parts Chassidism and Litvish/Yeshivish/Misnagdish

Chassidism comes from the Baal Shem Tov and his followers

And LItvish/Yeshivsish//Misnagdish comes from the Vilna Gaon/The CHasam Sofer and their followers which was formed in response to Chassidim whom they considered to be wrong

P.S. Given the strong economic and social incentives to be “off the derekh”, one might want to study why anyone would willingly give up most of their economic prospects and agree to live in a marginalized ghetto just because Ha-Shem told them to 3000+ years ago.

That has been the case for some time now. Many jews converted to christianity because of economic benefit and many jews left the Shtells to the Big cities or America for the same reason
