666 is the Gemtria of Nero (The Roman Emperor) not sure what language, If its Hebrew , Greek or latin
April 15, 2016 2:34 am at 2:34 am in reply to: Should frum children have a library card? ✡️👪📚💳 #1149587zahavasdadParticipantIt is illegal in most states to expel teenagers under 18 from your home under most circumstances (There are exceptions for physical danger issues)
Bringing a forbidden book in the house is not one of the exceptions
zahavasdadParticipantMy local supermarket was advertising Quinoa Sushi
zahavasdadParticipantCorn is a very versatile crop. Its uses vary from grain like item (Corn Bread, Corn Muffins etc) to Sweetners (High Fructose Corn Syrup) to Gasoline (Ethanol)
I dont think any other Kityot can be used as a sweetner or gasoline.
All your cars have some Ethanol in them
zahavasdadParticipantMDG
I did hear that Maize (American Corn) was mistaken for something else and became Kitnyot
Maize is not a Legume
zahavasdadParticipantWe arent debating if Kitnyot is permitted, but about the ever expanding world of Kiniyot.
I am not debating if one should eat Kitnyot, but rather the expanding defination which is really mocking the whole minhag .
zahavasdadParticipantI quoted from the OU magazine and the Star-K and the O-U on the package (You have to buy the ones that have been koshered for passover, you just cant buy any old Quiona package)
rav moshe allowed Peanuts
They could make Potato cookies and cakes all year round, but they dont because its too expensive, but there is no reason you cant and yes you could bake a bread the same way
zahavasdadParticipantAnd still does not deflect the reason why some will say that the chashash of kitniyos applies. Obviously there are differences if kitniyos should be extended to include, but for that ask your own Rov, if you have one.
the OU and the Star K both allow Quinoa. In fact the OU did a complete investigation into Quiona and even went down to Ecuador and saw exactly how it is cultivated. You can read about it in the OU magazine they had an entire article last year or 2 years ago (I think, but it was very recent)
Anyone can assur anything, It takes a Talmid Chacham to actually mutar something.
There really isnt much differnece between Cake and Bread. There is a differnence but its not huge. Potato Starch cake and cookies is very common, you can make a bread in a similar way
zahavasdadParticipantSchool taxes are always on the local level. Foreign Aid is from a federal level. Its a different tax
zahavasdadParticipantPotato Bread in the store is Chometz as is Corn Bread. Its only because that how they make it
However it doesnt have to be, they could bake them without being Chometz
Continuing to read Wikipedia on Quinoa
As a chenopod, quinoa is closely related to species such as beetroots, spinach and tumbleweeds.
Wild rice is another example of people making things Kitynot that isnt. Wild rice is a GRASS not a rice, the only thing it has in common with rice is the name and it sort of looks like rice, but its a GRASS
zahavasdadParticipantCorn, peanuts, Mustard and Quiona are part of the mesorah controversy
zahavasdadParticipantThey sell Potato bread with the Frankfurter or Hamburger Rolls
Only those Ashkenazic poskim who were part of the original kitnios g’zeira (about 600-700 years ago) were permitted to determine which foods would be part of the g’zeira; we cannot do it on our own.
Corn was not available in Europe. Its a totally american crop and was brought back to Europe after the Europeans came to the new world
Mustard is another example of the ever increasing chumralaztion of Kityot
zahavasdadParticipantPotato bread is more common than you think
zahavasdadParticipantDoor to Door busing is not a mandatory service
zahavasdadParticipantQuinoa is a berry , like a strawberry and nothing like a string bean and yet some have called it Kitnyot
zahavasdadParticipantThis was never answered by the OP, but it is really important, Does the kid need special ed
This is a very important fact, because of the kid cannot handle a regular yeshiva for sure most wont take him
zahavasdadParticipant10000% true. I just don’t agree with you that allowing people to learn torah in a torah environment that they cant afford will have an impact on that. I see them as very very separate issues.
The problems are people cannot afford the tuition and the Yeshivas cannot afford to give many discounts, especially to somone from outside the community (Sometimes someone from the community will get a break over someone from outside)
zahavasdadParticipantDepends how old the kids are, backyard camp works for 3 or 4 year olds, Does not work for 10 year olds
zahavasdadParticipantMaybe elsewhere they are more generous than NY. In NY they are brutal when you are asked for discounts, they even ask how much money you spend on clothes before they give it to you
Camp is not a Luxury. The kids cannot sit around the house and be bored all summer
zahavasdadParticipantSo now someone who became a Zionist after the Holocaust is considered OTD?
zahavasdadParticipantSY
The Rebbes dont get a tuition break, they get FREE tuition as do the children of the secretaries and other workers at the schools
zahavasdadParticipantThe main gadol who was a Zionist before 1939 was Rav Kook. I see no evidence he would have changed his mind had he lived to 1948.
In 1948 the choices of places for jews to live significantly changed and the 2 main choices to live were either Palestine or the United States, both places forbidden by the gedolim in 1939
zahavasdadParticipantMaybe in Chicago its different than NY.
Middle Class does not mean rich and that you can afford insane amounts of tution. The housing alone in NYC is insane again. In my area houses start at $600,000 and its not even a rich area.
I was at a symposium about the high cost of tutiton and some Rav gave mussar about money people spend on “gashmus” and then told him how expensive it was to live in our community (He lives here too) and he basically had no answer and blamed the real estate
zahavasdadParticipantFYI
My auto insurance is fairly cheap and I pay about $1500 a year
Kosher food is expensive even in NYC
zahavasdadParticipantSY
I think alot of the leadership is really clueless on the issue of the high cost of yeshiva tutiton, I really think they wing it and have no clue about the real costs of yeshiva tutions. Many of them send their kids to yeshiva for free and really cant comprehend inability to pay the tutions and dont understand that so called “Luxuries” and not really luxuries
zahavasdadParticipantIn the city (Not Borough park) the school buses stop at corners and not at every house and there doesnt seem to be a problem
zahavasdadParticipantAY
Many charedim use the arguement of gedolim who before the war rejected zionism (Like Rav Elchonan Wasserman) and compare with post war Rabbanim
Some did change their mind. The Maunkatcher Rebbe was famously against zionism, but his son after the war changed his mind and became and zionist (and left his chassidic Yishua , but remained charedi) because of it
April 13, 2016 12:12 pm at 12:12 pm in reply to: Do rebbes go to college?/Yeshivish job options? #1160327zahavasdadParticipantI said “Like Herman Wouk” not get Herman Wouk. Herman Wouk is 100 years old and Im not sure he can write anymore.
They wont sell any books priced at $69.95 the Berel Wein books or the book pictures of the Gedolim are in that price range. so there is a market
There are people who might be willing to cut a deal for the right project. Steven Spielberg agreed to take less money to make Schindlers List (They thought it wouldnt sell and when it was a hit , he gave all the profits away) and there are others who might be willing to write a quality kosher book at a reduced cost
zahavasdadParticipantIf the school bus stops every few houses It blocks the street from emergency vehicles going through. Those precious minuets make a difference for Hatzolah.
zahavasdadParticipantHonking someone as soon as the light turns green is not an averirah, might be a little impatient, but its not an averorah
zahavasdadParticipantWe live in an information society unlike previous generations where most incomes were earned from manual labor which didnt require much education.Today with the information society you need more education to get those jobs and earn income
zahavasdadParticipantOne can drive for tomche Shabbos and deliver food for a Mitzvah.
zahavasdadParticipantWhat some people do is send their kid to a regular yeshiva and then rent a room for them from someone in the neighborhood, but rents in NYC are very expensive and this alone might cost you $500-$1000 a month depending on living conditions
I dont think Chassidic schools (except for Chabad) would take him
BTW Its not clear to me if your son needs special Ed? If he needs some sort of special ed those schools cost $50,000
zahavasdadParticipantThere was an article on YWN where a Gadol did not want the french jews to make aliyah
zahavasdadParticipant$3000-$4000 a year including room and board is impossible. Not trying to be discuraging, but unfortuantly its the truth. They dont even charge that amount without room and board which adds significantly to the cost
zahavasdadParticipantYeshivas are very expensive and its a major problem without much solution. IMO if a solution is not found it might destroy the jewish community
You rav is wrong, he cannot expect you to spend money you dont have
Dont be so sure that Dorming is a good idea for your son, it might work for some, but it doesnt work for others , some kids do get homesick and are not really mature enough to live away from home.
Most of the yeshivas that have dorm do not teach secular education. The more modern schools that teach good secular education do not have dorms. The only except might be MTA, but that is very expensive
zahavasdadParticipantLC
There are rabbanim who forbid celebrating July 4th because its Chukas HaGoyim
April 11, 2016 1:21 pm at 1:21 pm in reply to: Do rebbes go to college?/Yeshivish job options? #1160324zahavasdadParticipantand BTW some Chassidic Stories are actually from the works of I.L. Perez
You can look up “If Not Higher” and “The Three Wishes”, they are not chassidicm stories, they are the fictional works of IL Perez inspired by Chassidic Stories
April 11, 2016 1:19 pm at 1:19 pm in reply to: Do rebbes go to college?/Yeshivish job options? #1160323zahavasdadParticipantYou get what you pay for, if you pay garbage, you will get garbage
You dont seem to know the difference between Herman Wouk, Chaim Potak and Sholom Alechem as you are mixing them up.
And FYI Herman Wouk is very much alive, He is 100 years old
April 11, 2016 11:33 am at 11:33 am in reply to: Do rebbes go to college?/Yeshivish job options? #1160320zahavasdadParticipantThere is no reason CIS or Artscroll cannot hire good writers, there are plenty of great jewish authors. Nobel Laurets and Pulitzer prize winners.
Potak, Roth, Wiesel , Sholom Alechem (The Jewish Mark Twain) Kafka, Issac Singer and Herman Wouk (Who did write orhtodox themed books) are all great jewish authors.
Fine you dont want to read Dickens because he was an Anti-Semite. go read someone else. There is no reason Artscroll or CIS cannot get someone like Herman Wouk to write for them
zahavasdadParticipantThe only way to know what any older jew looked like is from either them following (not biblicalm times)
The artist Rembrant painted a picture of a young jewish couple in Amsterdam called the Jewish Bride in 1667
And in the Prague Museum there is a water color series of about 8 watercolors of a jewish death , funeral and mourning. It also dates from the 1600’s or 1700’s
zahavasdadParticipantRecenly jews were rescured from Yemen which is not only a dangerous country, Its an outpost of ISIS.
People wondered, why there were still jews in such a dangerous place. It seems these jews became under the influence of Satmar who convienced them it was better to stay in Yemen than emigrate to Israel.
Seems also some are trying to do the same in France and conviencing jews its better to stay in france than emigrate to Israel
zahavasdadParticipantIsrael is a jewish state influenced by Halacha, but not a halcha state. Without a Sanhedrin its impossible to create a Halachic state (Things like enforcement of Halcha or the Abandoment of Ellu V Ellu (There needs to be one law for everyone not halachic disagreement on a state level) are impossible at present)
zahavasdadParticipantI dont think many people think Moses looked like Charlton Heston
zahavasdadParticipantMany people think doing their taxes is more difficult than it really is.
Unless you own your own business, have alot of capital gains, its actually quite easy especially if you use the standard deduction and if you use the software. You just plug in the numbers right off your w-2 and you are finished as it does all the work.
Another franchise I saw on the popular list was a painting franchise. In both the taxes and the painting franchise you are competing against people who do it themselves or think they can do it themselves
April 7, 2016 8:58 pm at 8:58 pm in reply to: The requirement for everyone to give Tochachah #1145287zahavasdadParticipantSomeone who is putting on Tefillin incorrectly is probably more interested in doing the right thing than someone eating a cheeseburger at McDonalds. They have already started to do the right thing and need a little help.
The person eating the cheeseburger is not interested in doing the right thing as much, he knows what is right and chooses not to
zahavasdadParticipantLike I said, I do ecommerce and people in my real life know I am the expert so many frum people in my life come up to me to discuss it, they want advice and want to know how to make easy money doing it so they can learn most of the time and work maybe 1 hour a day.
There are times ive spent 3-4 hours just packing stuff a day
zahavasdadParticipantwithout trying to boast here, but I am sort of an expert with e-commerce (which is one of the reasons I am opposed to filters, It would basically shut down my parnassah)
I know alot of people who sell online and some frum jews want to get into this space as well. I know every pitfall that has occured with e-commerce businesses, from suppliers cutting you off, to Amazon or eBay shutting you down , warehouses having fires or getting flooded) you name it, i have heard it. Click Fraud with Google Pay per click, Other sellers being margin killers and selling stuff for below cost (this occurs alot)
Everyone thinks they can get stuff and sell online and make alot of money, it just isnt so
zahavasdadParticipantSY
the original post was by someone who wanted to make alot of money withouth actually having to work for it. There seems to be this idea in some communities that if you have enough Bittachon and Emunah , hashem will provide even if you do almost nothing to make it happen. If you learn instead of making sales calls, that business will come though because you spent your time learning
I am not against people going into business, As long as they know the risks and pitfalls of doing it and can get the money to invest in it
zahavasdadParticipantPeople who get into business have to know about the pitfalls.
I see too much especially in the frum community people say “get into business” without saying the pitfalls. Even a good business plan is not always good enough
If you want to get into an almost sure fire business that works, get into Real Estate, that is where the real money is. You can make a killing there. real Estate is almost the sure fire path to wealth
