Authorities say a 48-year-old New York City man has died after he was pulled unconscious from the Delaware River along the New York-Pennsylvania border.

The Times Herald-Record of Middletown reports the National Park Service says the Queens man was swimming Friday near the Ascalona Campground in the Sullivan County Town of Highland, 85 miles northwest of New York City.

Officials say the man was under water for less than a minute when a group of kayakers reached him and found that he was unconscious. After family and friends tried to revive him on shore, he was taken to Bon Secours Hospital in Port Jervis before being transferred to Westchester Medical Center, where he died Saturday.

Police say the man wasn’t wearing a life jacket. His name hasn’t been released.
