Bush Proclaims Month of May Jewish Heritage Month

bush.jpgPresident Bush issued the following statement:

Jewish American Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate the history, culture, and faith of Jewish Americans and their contributions to our Nation.

The story of the Jewish people in America is the story of America itself.  When the first Jewish settlers arrived on our shores hundreds of years ago, they saw a land of promise and liberty.  With hard work and determination, these individuals helped build our country and strengthen our values.  Their commitment to religious freedom and their belief in democracy have enriched our society and helped make our country a beacon of hope for all.

Many Jewish Americans have served in our military with valor and distinction in times of war and peace.  We pay special tribute to all those who stepped forward when our country needed them most.  These American heroes confronted grave dangers to protect our Nation.

During Jewish American Heritage Month and throughout the year, we honor Jewish Americans who played an integral role in shaping the cultural fabric of our Nation.  Their spirit and talents have helped America succeed and prosper, and their efforts continue to remind us of the many blessings of this great country.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of  America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 2008 as Jewish American Heritage Month.  I call upon all Americans to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities to honor Jewish Americans across the country.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-ninth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-second.

  1. I happen to be impressed with his word usage of “Jewish American”. Whats he trying to do, though, make a new Holiday, and, a little on the random side.

  2. “twenty-ninth day of April, in the year of our…”

should have said on the 24th day of the first month in the year 5768 from creation.

  3. the story of Jewish America is a story of assimilation. now, more than ever before it is our task to reverse this trend. don’t mind the small, or even large, differences in hashkafa – we must unite to save the future of Klal Yisroel.

We must make it clear that it is American Jews, rather than Jewish Americans.

  4. what a gelechter!

I celebrate my Jewish Heritage every day!
I celebrate Mothers Day every day!
I celebrate Fathers Day every day!

I love the way the world “celebrates” these “heritage” days.

  5. As an American I would rather see May as an American Heritage month…Bush aught to drop the bomb, yeah, THE BOMB(s), on the Muslim radicals in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran etc.

  6. Moshiachnow, I disagree with you on both counts.

    Regarding setting aside Hashkafic differences:
Shlomo HaMelech said Es…viEs, but we must always remember what is true to the Torah and what is against it and to differentiate between the two. We can never accept anti-Torah theology or practice, even if such methods are employed by fellow Jews.

Lo Alecha Hamelacha ligmor…do yours and let Hashem take care of the rest; don’t compromise on the Torah’s values for “kiruv” or any other noble cause.

    Regarding American Jews:
I believe that Jews in America are both American Jews and Jewish Americans and, in this case, they are one and the same.

Where it comes to matters of loyalty to the country and gratitude to it for its kindness, we are Americans; regarding matters of faith, however, we are, thankfully, allowed, as Americans, to practice our faith as Jews.

Therefore, it is clear that we are American Jews AND Jewish Americans, as one does not preclude the other, and we are obligated to be loyal citizens to our host country, and, in general to show gratitude when we are given kindness and good.

On a different note, I did find it ironic that the president used the “year of the Christian lord” in a proclamation about Jews, but since President Bush is a Christian (as is the country’s roots despite it being religion-neutral), it makes sense for him to frame his pronouncement in Christian terms, which are his own terms.

  7. I think it might be a good idea for evryone to take a step back & have Hakaras Hatov and appreciate what we have in the White House now. Whether you agree with all his decisions or not, this President is a true friend of the Jews and a real supporter of Israel. We will not see the likes of this in the near future. That, you can be assured of. The news lately should remind us what it is like to have an Antisemite and liberal such as Jimmy Carter in the White House. Do not take this for granted. So, Mr. Bush, (as I am sure that the White House is now reading Theyeshivaworld.com too) thank you very much for your decency and support. You will be missed.

  8. to #1 and #4 when it comes to addressing the PRESIDENT one should be respectful, see shemos 11 pasuk 8 rashi among other places..so if for 1st hit-l-r (pharoh) (built infants into wall, threw them into water, slaughtered them for his tzuras,)kalvochomer ben benoi shel kal vochomer l’gabay PRES. of US. cant apply free speech when against halacha at least say mr bush,mr george bush
