YWN Exclusive: NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly Surprises Crown Heights Residents With Midnight Visit

kelly.jpg1:17AM EST: The situation in Crown Heights needs no introduction on YWN. At this point, all understand that the situation is literally teetering at the edge of a cliff, mass media coverage is being given, and officials such as NYS Assemblyman Dov Hikind are demanding an adequate response from the Mayors office and the NYPD.

Perhaps that’s the exact reason why Police Commissioner Ray Kelly chose to see the situation first hand. Except that this visit was not an ordinary visit.

A source tells YWN, that Kelly suddenly arrived in Crown Heights unannounced at 11:30PM on Monday night, surprising all those that saw him sitting in his car parked outside Chabad Headquarters, located at 770 Eastern Parkway.

The Commissioner sat talking to residents outside 770, and listened attentively to their complaints. The Commissioner then exited his black suburban, walked to a nearby Shul (located on Eastern Parkway between Albany and Kingston Avenues) – where a Shiur was taking place – and made a brief appearance.

Upon exiting the Shul, the Commissioner said a few words to Chief Banks who had just arrived, got in his car, and left. Minutes later, Chief Banks was joined by the top brass of the 71st PCT, and according to eyewitnesses – conducted an impromptu meeting on the street, which lasted close to an hour.

Although there is no way to know what the details of an NYPD brass meeting on a street at midnight were, sources tell YWN, that major changes are expected at the 71st Pct in the very near future.

  1. from this article it seems that NYPD is taking this situation very seriously…. racking their brains a little….

  2. I liked kelly all along perhaps he’s gearing up for his mayoral run in 09!!! I know he met recently with a lot of rabbi’s and communities in the past few month…..this reminds me of obama when the heat is on he doesn’t do a thing when it catches fire he goes burning

  3. To NeveAliza…

It won’t really matter what a Rov
says because Chabad answers to the Rebbe.

    And he said to STAY.

  4. I looked into it a little more… different video on the net…. no proof that they are really, really serious .. and figuring out a plan .. time will tell if they are restructuring police lax attitude or just goofing off as they have been..

  5. NeveAliza: Do you not consider the Lubavitcher Rebbe to be a gadol? The Rebbe strongly discouraged Lubavitchers from leaving Crown Heights, saying that “kan tzivoh Hashem es habrocho.” This was true even during the riots, and even when the blacks started moving in years before, when all the other Jews left for Williamsburg, BP, and Flatbush. So yes, halachically Lubavitchers can and must live in Crown Heights.

  6. to #4.. and cant we say that he’s doing it because of concern whats going on there .he always came across to us as sincere dedicated public servant with right moral values( probably republican,)

  7. How do you know that the Rebbe was referring to himself as the brocho? The Rebbe also spoke of 770s significance as “the place where my father-in-law the [previous] Rebbe learned and davened for 10 years” long after the previous Rebbe left Olam Hazeh. while there might be other fine Yiddishe shchunos, the place for Chasidei Chabad is Crown Heights.

  8. He may have also not been. That would the other option. True, why listen to a Rov. We hav a deceased leader, and nothing can ever, ever change. It works out well.

  9. is there anyone who claims that the Rebbe did not have nevuoh? The Rebbe said plainly himself that he could see, obviously not perfectly clear like Moshe Rebbeinu but after all there are no other neviim like Moshe. the term “shchina medaber m’toch grono” applies to every Nosi haDor. Regarding the Rebbe’s status as the “gadol hador,” (by which you must also mean Nosi hador), the Rebbe said b’feirush that the previous Rebbe was Nosi haDor, and since everything that the Rebbe said about the previous Rebbe also goes on the Rebbe, the Rebbe must be Nosi.

  10. Yes! Not only that, he was truly a prophet, leading a whole bunch of confused baaley teshuvah to absolutely nowhere! Is there anyone who disagrees? I looked over the entire 770! And heck, that’s whole of Khal Yisrael, except for the rest of Khal Yisrael. But that doesn’t count, because everyone agrees that he was a prophet! Duh! I don’t know how you can’t believe in it- he even said so himself! Flawless logic! And of course, anything he said about his father must apply to himself. Elementary, my dear Watson. Gee whiz, you guys are kind of sad.

  11. Enough with defending the Rebbe’s title,
when a chossid behaves like a chossid should then the Rebbe’s gadlus shines. Most Shluchim B’H continue to bring nachus to their Rebbe, by perpetuating his teachings and helping mankind wherever and whenever possible. “Hamaseh Hu Ha-Ikur”
Sitting on your computer and attempting to establish a Title for the Rebbe is most certainly not helping the Rebbe.
As far as the demonstrations and media comments regarding Crown Heights:
It is most insulting to compare Crown Hts to Nazi Germany..
Whoever made the comparison should apologize to the survivors of the Holocaust. Imagine those who lost family members or those that survived the camps? What must they feel listening to the comparison??
Eastern Parkway is constantly full of Yidden walking day and night. People are constantly walking till all hours of the night throughout the neighborhood..
Many homes are torn down and rebuilt – into mansions – new businesses/shops are increasing and looking much better than ever…….B’H for all this – so how dare anyone compare this to Nazi Germany?
We lose all credibility with this.
It is wrong for any person to be robbed, beaten or even insulted. This must be addressed but turning this into a war does not make things better for anyone. It does not improve the climate either.
Norman Rosenbaum did not behave this way EVER! He was fighting for justice for his late brother Yankel zt’l who was killed because he was a Jew.
He spoke and behaved like a mentsh and earned the respect of the community at large (both Jews and non Jews alike) and even the ‘heilige’ media.
Take your cue from Rosenbaum – behave like a Yid should! Make a kiddush Hashem and bring nachus to Hakadosh Baruch Hu!!! I promise the Rebbe wants that too!!! 😉

  12. YIDDIN!! PLEASE WHAT’S THE POINT OF MACHLOIKES!?

WE MUST AVOID MACHLOIKES AT ALL COSTS… REBBE THIS…CHABAD THAT…. ARE THESE ARGUMENTS GOING TO HELP US SERVE THE RIBOINOI SHEL OILAM BETTER?

EVERY YID MUST LIVE AND LET LIVE, AND YIDDIN MUST STOP SQUABBLING OVER SILLY DETAILS

ESPECIALLY SINCE MUCH OF THE MACHLOIKISEN ARE LISHEM MACHLOIKES – BUT EVEN IF THEY ARE NOT IT STILL ROCHILUS AND LASHON HARAH FOR OTHERS WHO SEE IT. IT CAUSES PEOPLE TO HOLD NEGATIVE FEELINGS TOWARDS YIDDIN RACHMONOH LITZLAN

THIS IS WHAT THE CHOFETZ CHAIM WARNED US ABOUT

IF SOMEONE IS WORRIED THAT ANOTHER YID IS NOT SERVING HASHEM PROPERLY OR IS AN APIKOIRES, THEN THERE ARE HALACHOIS ABOUT THAT TO; HOW TO TELL HIM ETC…

BUT STAM TO CAUSE SINAS CHINAM, EVEN IF SONE THINKS IT’S LISHEIM SHOMAYIM… (DO YOU THINK YOUR COMMENT ON A BLOG WILL CHANGE THE WAY SOMEONE LIVES THEIR LIFE? WILL A CHABADNIK CHANGE BECAUSE OF A NASTY COMMENT? OR WILL LITVISHER YID CHANGE HIS LIFE VIEWS BECAUSE OF A CHABADNIKS RETORT?) WILL NOT HELP ANYONE

    SHOLOM KELI BROCHOH
