Yerushalayim: Police Back Down on Autopsy Request


The tragedy that occurred in the Makor Baruch neighborhood of Yerushalayim this past Shabbos (Yisro – 18 Shevat 5772) was compounded by fears of police demanding an autopsy.

The story surrounds a family that R”L found the bloodied lifeless body of their 32-year-old son in his bed. It appears the niftar stabbed himself to death, presenting with multiple stab wounds.

The family called for EMS but there was nothing to be done – it was too late to save the young man.

Police crime investigation technicians arrived on the scene, and as expected, there was talk of the need for an autopsy. Zaka volunteer Yisrael Wertheimer, who is an aide to Meir Porush, turned to police and began applying pressure to back down from demands for a post mortem. Simultaneously, word of the event spread and neighborhood curiosity seekers began gathering.

Baruch Hashem efforts by Porush and Wertheimer were successful and police withdrew demands for an autopsy.  Police crime scene technicians realized there was no fear of criminal activity, contributing to their willingness to forgo an autopsy.

Sikrikim however did not pass the opportunity to become involved, and they snatched the body to prevent an autopsy, creating unnecessary and unwanted tensions and grief for the family. After senior Yerushalayim Zaka commander Bentzi Ohring became involved the body was located in an apartment on Ovadia Street in Geula. The body was then transferred to Shamgar Funeral Home.

  1. Lately any story involving a party one is against, and they are called “sikrikim”. No body calls themselves sikrikim. And in this case the people who took the meis did so on behalf of, and with the request of, the mishpacha. They are the good guys considering the sordid history of the police attempting to force an autopsy c”v.

  2. Sikrikim became involved without reason? What in the world are you talking about? Why do you think police didn’t force an autopsy? Is it because they love the chareidim? Are you nuts? Its almost completly based on the fact that they know they will be met with violence! Why do you think Yerushalayim doesn’t look like Tel Auiv CV? After all it is the capital! You change the story to fit your agenda! For shame!
