Chareidim May Support Leon in Jerusalem Mayoral Race

jerIt appears that Moshe Leon is working hard to gain chareidi backing for his candidacy in the Jerusalem mayoral race. Leon, a Likud candidate, in recent weeks met with a number of chareidi public officials, who seem to be willing to back his candidacy. This includes Shas leader Aryeh Deri and Yahadut Hatorah MKs Moshe Gafne and Meir Porush.

While Leon is dati leumi, he is according to many the best candidate to unseat Mayor Nir Barkat, for he is Shomer Shabbos yet not chareidi.

When asked to comment, Leon confirmed meeting with the chareidi MKs mentioned above. He did not say if they agreed to support him. He is expected to officially announce his candidacy in the near future.

According to reliable unofficial reports, Bayit Yehudi is considering supporting Leon as well.It will be interesting to see just how this plays out if former Mayor Uri Lupoliansky decides to run as well.

  1. What qualities of management, leadership and responsibility do voters see in M. Leon verus the present mayor? Is it purely a religious voting issue.

Those in Bet Shemesh would like to see a change in the administration there for management, leadership and responsible reasons.
