DM Ya’alon Delays Induction of 1,800 Chareidim

yaalonDefense Minister Moshe Ya’alon has stated on numerous occasions that he opposes trying to compel bnei yeshivos to serve in the IDF. He fears the planned draft law will backfire and not only will the chareidi tzibur not report for duty, those who were willing to serve in units tailored to the chareidi tzibur will no longer do so. Ya’alon has spoken out often against planned criminal sanctions for those who fail to comply with the new draft law.

Along these lines Ya’alon on Monday, 20 Teves 5774 delayed the induction of 1,800 bnei torah who were scheduled to report to the IDF induction center. Ya’alon explained that since the Shaked Committee is in the final stage of preparing the new law, he feared that drafting the 1,800 chareidim at present law would result in complicating completion of the committee’s mission.

Ya’alon has used his authority as defense minister three times to delay the induction of the bnei yeshivos and he faces mounting opposition and appeals to the Supreme Court, which challenge his authority to do so. Opponents explain that when the Supreme Court disqualified the Tal Law, it compelled the IDF to draft all draft eligible citizens without any special provisions for yeshiva students.

  1. In Israel, any court decision can be overrules by an absolute majority in the kenesset. If Likud and Bayit Yehudi want to declare war on the hareidim, they will do so. If they choose note to, it isn’t going to happen. Yaalon probably understands that conscription of hareidim will weaken the IDF and has no military justification, and given his concerns about defending the country, he doesn’t want to sacrifice national security in order to attempt to break the hareidi community – but Bennett and Netanyahu have the last word in the matter.

  2. Akuperma, you’re so lucky for having a Mashgiach Tamidi, Yanky, who supervises your work as the spokesman for the chareidi tzibbur on a constant basis. How did you manage such a good gabbai?

  3. The angel asked Bilaam ‘What is the big rush to curse the Jews?’ While the Supreme Court and Lapid know very well that chareidim are unnecessary in the army where thousands of needless soldiers were recently laid off, their fanatical hatred towards chareidim blinds them and they are acting wildly without thought.
DM Yaalon, on the other hand, is not (at least officially) a chareidi despiser but is practical and logical.
