NYPD Police Unions Seek Speedy Stop-Frisk Decision

stfNew York City police unions have asked a federal appeals court to hurry its decision on whether they can continue stop-and-frisk litigation if Mayor Bill de Blasio drops the case.

In papers filed with the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals this week, union lawyers asked for a decision on whether they can intervene and continue the appeal of decisions that found officers sometimes violated the Constitution when carrying out the stop-and-frisk policy.

A judge made those rulings last August. Three months later, the unions challenged them in the same court, saying they unfairly tainted the integrity of the force and re-wrote officer conduct rules.

Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s administration appealed the August decision but newly-elected Mayor de Blasio has said he will drop the city’s appeal.
