Councilman David G. Greenfield is urging the Department of Transportation (DOT) to end metered parking earlier on Friday evenings in Boro Park. The program, if enacted, will terminate metered-parking at 5pm rather than 7pm on Friday evenings on 13th Avenue and 18th Avenues in Boro Park. Greenfield has already successfully ended the metered parking on 16th Avenue in Boro Park at 5pm via a pilot program that the City agreed to at his request. Those few hours are crucial for the large Shabbos observing community in Boro Park that could not park on those streets during the winter or when making an early Shabbos.
“I know firsthand that finding parking in Borough Park before Shabbos is difficult. That’s why I pushed the city to introduce a pilot program on 16th Avenue ending metered parking at 5pm. That pilot has proved successful and has literally open up over one hundred new parking spaces in the community. With so many stores closing early anyway, there is no need for meters to keep turning over parking spaces and for people to be driving around aimlessly looking for spots. That’s why we should expand this to 13th and 18th Avenues, as well,” said Councilman Greenfield.
Councilman Greenfield has long led the effort to make life for drivers a little bit easier. Greenfield passed the law that allows drivers a five-minute grace period before they can be ticketed for Muni-Meter violations. Greenfield passed another law ending the difficult-to-remove window stickers for alternate-side parking violations. More recently, Greenfield passed the law that would shut-down broken muni-meters and allow consumers to pre-pay muni-meters. Greenfield has also worked closely with the Department of Transportation to remove out-of-date “No Parking” signs in Boro Park and flash to create more parking for drivers.

Does Greenfield realize that Shabbos starts earlier than 5 pm from November until mid to late January? If he wants the large observant Shabbos community he should have the meters terminated @ 4 pm especially from November to late late January.
@eli51, do you realize that you can pay for an hours worth of parking at 4bpm which will end at 5PM? As it is, the city is doing a favor for the residents of Boro Park, let’s be thankful for that and not grabby.

Absolutely. Been saying this for years. Finally someone doing something. It is not a commercial area at a certain point.
Can we get Mr. Greenfield look into the length of each City bus stop. Many of them are much longer than is needed as a bus stop. They take away much needed space for parking, on a 7/24 hours basis. They should be shortened.
