7 Cases Involving NY Politicians Sent To Prosecutors

albanyAn investigator in New York state agency overseeing elections has forwarded seven cases involving potential felonies to prosecutors.

Risa Sugarman, chief enforcement counsel at New York’s Board of Elections, tells the Associated Press Friday that while she can’t comment on specifics, the cases relate to elected officials and candidates at different levels of government scattered around the state.

Sugarman’s enforcement unit investigates campaign-related offenses and can refer any potential criminal activity to local district attorneys and the Attorney General. It’s up to individual prosecutors to decide whether to file charges based on the evidence. The seven cases were all sent to prosecutors since the enforcement unit was created last year in an effort to crack down on corruption.

The referral of the cases was first reported by the Daily News.
