Tea-Party Takes Hit In Alaska: Murkowski Wins Re-Election Senate Seat

Republican U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska won re-election, using write-in votes to beat the businessman who had defeated her for the party’s nomination, the Associated Press said.

Murkowski, 53, mounted a write-in challenge after losing the Republican primary in August to attorney Joe Miller, 43.

The AP called the race today after Murkowski took a lead over Miller, a Tea Party favorite endorsed by former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, in a count of write-in votes.

  1. But Murkowski is a also conservative Republican, and Miller is young and if he doesn’t act like a sore loser might have a bright future. The Democrats (in a state that has elected Democrats to state wide office, and has some now) came in third. The race is of no consequence, and the loss to a fellow conservative doesn’t diminish the Tea Party movement.

The “Tea party” screw-ups are in places such as Delaware, Nevada, Connecticut and perhaps California where a more centrist Republican might have won, thereby giving control of the Senate to the Republicans (not to mention New York, where a serious conservative might have won the junior seat in the United States Senate).

  2. Republican primary voters put up weaker candidates for the Senate in DE, NV, CT, CO, and CA. Boxer probably would have won no matter whom the Republicans nominated, but the other four had been looking like easy Republican victories. There weren’t any strong Republican candidates for either Senate Seat in NY; DioGuardi was as good as the people he defeated in the primary and the last time that voters elected candidates from two different parties for US Senate seats in the same election was 1966 (and even in that case the Republican had previously been elected as a Democrat). Nominating a weaker candidate also cost the Republicans the governor’s mansion in Illinois. OTOH, the Democrats nominated a weaker candidate for the Senate seat in PA; Specter probably would have defeated Toomey.

  3. This is a total repudiation of Sarah Palin. Now she wants to run for president. Her looney antics will set the Republican party back 100 years.
