VIDEO: Israel’s First Chareidi Weightlifting Competition

(VIDEO IN EXTENDED ARTICLE)

Betar Illit resident Michael Sheetrit, is not your ordinary avreich, for in addition to his limudim, he is a regular figure in Jerusalem’s Power Gym, where he continues his work outs towards becoming Israel’s first chareidi weightlifting champ.

David, a Jerusalem Chabad chossid works out there too, as do other chareidim, who spent about half a year preparing for the first ever Chareidi weight-lifting competition. The competition at the gym included Litvish and Chassidish lomdei Torah participants.

The gym is run by a frum person, Mordechai Buchnik, who also has the title Mr. Israel. He is credited with breaking several strength-related world records. He explains that not all rabbonim are on board with his program, and in one case, when one of his students saw a rosh yeshiva walk in, he ran for the bathroom to hide and hid for two hours.

Yigal, another avreich, explains he feels there is nothing wrong with the weightlifting after limudim. Regarding the competition, the winner, Yigal, bench pressed 130kg (286LBS) 29 times.

  1. So now we’re going to have a chareidi weight-lifting competition. I can just imagine the gedolei Torah who will be sitting at the head table….

  2. Would you rather they be out burning tires and blocking traffic in protest or throwing stones? It is much better that these boys are engaged in a healthy outlet than many of their counterparts who cannot sit and learn day and night

  3. I might have known the usual suspects would pour scorn on these guys for not following the herd.
Frankly, if working out makes you healthier and so better able to האלט קאף in learning for longer, then it’s probably a מצוה.

Frankly, if working out makes you healthier and so better able to האלט קאף in learning for longer, then why is it less worthy than eating or sleeping.

If working out makes you healthier and so better able to האלט קאף in learning for longer, then it is surely no less worthy than eating or sleeping for the same purpose.
