Germany Reportedly Negotiating A Deal With Hamas For A Prisoner Exchange

Germany is reported to be acting as a go-between to assist Israel is reaching a deal with Hamas for the release of the bodies of IDF lt. Hadar Goldin HY”D and Sgt. Oren Shaul. Their bodies were taken by Hamas during a battle in southern Gaza during Operation Protective Edge in the summer of 2014. Talks also include the release of Israeli citizens Avera (Avraham) Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed.

According to the al-Hayat newspaper, Germany is conducting talks with Hamas representatives, acting as a go-between towards reaching agreement for the release of the bodies and hostages. There is no mention as to the progress made in the talks if any.

Qatari Ambassador to Gaza, Mohammed Al-Emadi, earlier this week confirmed the talks involving Germany and Hamas are taking place. He reports one of Hamas’ demands includes the lifting of the blockade on Gaza.

Israel has been taking steps to advance a seaport for Gaza, a project involving Cyprus. However, as announced by Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, such a project will only be advanced when Hamas releases the bodies and prisoners.
