HaGaon HaRav Dov Landau Rules Of Giving Tzedaka: Local Needy Or Matching Campaign

A number of avreichim asked Rosh Yeshivas Slobodka HaGaon HaRav Dov Landau Shlita if it is better to give’s one tzedaka to the increasingly popular matching campaigns, in which one is promised his donation will be matched by another donor, or perhaps, best giving the tzedaka to one’s local poor, even if the sum is not matched.

It is pointed out however, that in the matching campaign, it is “all or none”, that is to say if the goal sum is not attained the nothing is donated to the course.

The rosh yeshiva is quoted in the Charedim10 News stating that it is preferable to give one’s tzedaka to the local needy instead of a matching campaign.

  1. no shock there, it’s brought down that that is the Halacha. The fact that you manufactured a crisis by getting three major donors to say that they won’t give their donation unless it gets matched by others doesn’t change that.
I am not saying that gimmicks don’t work, just they may be risky and don’t change the Halacha.

  2. The organizations from Eretz Yisroel typically quote gedolim saying that the tzedokoh to the poor from Eretz Yisroel is either considered the same as local tzedokoh or greater than it. I question the validity of these quotes.
