Chareidi Avreich Petitions a Court Against Israel’s Central Elections Committee


‘A’, a chareidi avreich who is very active in his community was not able to work as a poll watcher during the last election due what he claims to have been wrong claims against chareidim. As a result, he is now suing the Central Election Committee.

The lawsuit was filed with the Petach Tikvah Smalls Claim Court. The avreich presented his case and he leveled accusations against the election committee and the measures taken against chareidim by committee.

A senior chareidi attorney decided to escort the lawsuit, to assist him for the good of the chareidi tzibur. The Central Election Committee was given 30 days to respond to the lawsuit, which sites there were no separate gender classes in Bnei Brak for poll watchers and Kikar Shabbos News reports that only after it became involved did the Central Election Committee reverse its decision. In the lawsuit, he mentioned that another demand for poll watchers is that one is an IDF veteran.

The avreich decided to sue the committee for NIS 5000, and if the court approves the lawsuit, he is weighing the possibility of trying to bring a class action suit.

‘A’ is quoted telling Kikar Shabbos News that he is very active in his community and he was amazed to see the news coverage, the attitude against the chareidi tzibur at large, citing the possibility of discrimination against chareidim for being who they are.

‘A’ explains he does not have money but is very concerned for his community and the dignity of the community, prompting him to file the lawsuit against the Central Election Committee. He adds that he filed in the small claims court for in the latter, one does not have to pay for an attorney.

  1. I’m sure this guy could have attended the regular poll watching classes and found a seat in the back or stood on the side if he would have been uncomfortable sitting next to a woman at the meeting.
