Sheikh Raad Salah, who heads the Northern Branch of the Israel Islamic Association (IIA), registered a major victory, taking over 50% of the 680 votes to control the Arab Student Union in Tel Aviv University.
The Arab student union runs alongside the university’s Israeli student union and focuses on the needs of the school’s Arab students. Following the win, representatives announced they hope to assist everyone on campus.
The Arab union to date was under the control of the Hadash Party and the victory signals a radicalization of the student body. IIA officials are now setting their sights on student body elections in Haifa’s Technion University and Ben-Gurion University in the Negev.
