In deference to the US’s endless demands to make concessions to the Palestinian Authority ahead of US President Joe Biden’s visit, caretaker Prime Minister Yair Lapid ordered the Jerusalem Building Committee to remove Jewish building plans from its agenda, Walla reported on Tuesday.
The committee was scheduled to convene next Monday, three days after Biden’s visit ends.
The move follows Israel’s decision to retroactively approve illegal Arab construction in the E1 area of Area C along with a host of other significant concessions to the Palestinian Authority, including the legalization of the status of 5,500 undocumented PA residents and the granting of an additional 1,500 work permits to Gaza residents.
Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked refused Lapid’s order and announced that she will not remove Jewish building plans from the agenda while Arab building plans remain.
“I will not allow harm to construction plans for Jews only on my watch,” Shaked said. “Therefore I decided to postpone the entire agenda by a week.”
Religious Zionism MK Ofir Sofer slammed the approval of thousands of illegal Arab homes as a “surrender to terror, no less and no more.”
According to a Kan News report on Tuesday, Biden may call for a total construction freeze in Jewish settlements during his visit.
