  1. A true story…

On Monday May 11th 2014 I visited Ben’s Tallit Shop in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. Caroline and I had met Azriel, the manager of the shop, at the Hurva Shul one Shabbat in early 2013. We spoke about many things over an hour, including תכלת and our just ended 9 month trip to the Sinai, Egypt. He was very keen for me to attend Lag B’Omer in Meron with his group of male friends on Sat. 17th. I politely declined his offer as the ritual didn’t interest me in the slightest. I have always found the idea of praying at a deceased Rabbi’s grave for “intercession” as being akin to Necromancy. I also had no interest in being part of a huge throng of frenzied people in a congested space. (Note what happened at the site in 2021.)

I also pointed out to Azriel that I though Jews should shift their focus to Jerusalem away from Meron or Uman in Ukraine.

There is also the big issue this year of the ongoing Drought and bone dry vegetation in Israel so the organisers of this 2025 event have to be very careful.

Each to his own I suppose…
