IDF forces have wiped out a major Hamas tunnel network in the Beit Hanoun area of northern Gaza — the same underground route the terror group used to carry out a deadly ambush on Israeli troops nearly one year ago.
That 2024 attack claimed the lives of Cpt. Ilay Gavriel Atedgi, 22; Sgt. First Class (res.) Hillel Diener, 21; and Staff Sgt. Netanel Pessach, 21 — all members of the Kfir Brigade’s Shimshon Battalion.
In recent weeks, Shimshon Battalion troops have been back in the Beit Hanoun sector, working just inside the Israeli side of the Yellow Line to root out what remains of Hamas’s military infrastructure. As part of that effort, they located and destroyed the long-range tunnel, which the army says stretched roughly a kilometer underground and reached depths of dozens of meters.
