Cabinet Secretary To AG: You’ve Made It A Minhag To Act Only Against Chareidim”

Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs slammed Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara in a recent letter he sent her, accusing her of twisting the law to systematically target Chareidim while ignoring the law and obstructing the ex-Military Advocate General case despite her conflict of interest confirmed by the Supreme Court.

Fuchs’s attack came after Baharav-Miara published a legal opinion over the weekend stating her categorical opposition to the emerging Chareidi draft law and clarifying that if the issue reaches the Supreme Court, she will recommend striking it down. Baharav-Miara published her opinion despite the fact that discussions on the matter in the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee have not yet concluded and the legislation itself is still being formulated.

Her position prompted demands from UTJ members in a meeting with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu last week that the government issue a sharp response to the Attorney General.

Fuchs responded to the request and sent a letter to Baharav Miara, writing, among other things, “You’ve made it a minhag to act only against the Chareidim. It’s a shame you didn’t apply such strict standards for yourself in the case of the disgraced Military Advocate General affair.”

Fuchs continued by accusing her of colliding with the corrupt, left-wing Movement for Quality Government organization.

“You’ve developed an efficient method,” he wrote. “After every Supreme Court ruling, you issue a letter that makes the ruling far stricter than what was actually stated. The Movement for Quality Government then issues a letter demanding legal action following your baseless claims, petitions the Supreme Court, and then the Attorney General sides with the petitioner’s position instead of representing the government.”

Baharav-Miara was unanimously fired by the government months ago, but the Supreme Court revoked the dismissal, essentially paralyzing the democratically elected government by forcing it to work with a non-elected legal clerk who opposes its every move.
